The Collegian recently published a really fantastic profile of boxer Katongo Mulenga, who is also a Penn State student. The writer, Dean Meyers, shadows Katonogo as he trains at the Altoona Boxing Club (without a coach) and competes in a fight at Uniontown.
The story is very well written, with atmospheric lines like:
Atlantic City is glitz and glamour. Altoona is, well, gloomy and glum.
This is a blue-collar city with crumbling brick factories. This is a town built around a now-defunct railroading industry. Nowadays, this is a city best known for its Double-A baseball franchise. This is where dreams come to die.

The Collegian posted a disturbing and confusing story this afternoon.
A 50-year-old State College man was arrested Friday afternoon just hours after police say he broke into a Penn State student’s apartment and performed oral sex on the man while he was asleep.
That’s got to be one of the most frightening ways to be woken up. But here’s the part that convinced us there’s a more nuanced story here than simple sexual deviation.

Sex sells. That’s probably why the Collegian’s article about a new male escort service got above the fold A1 coverage.
The Gentleman of State College (here’s their MySpace… booty calls, anyone?) is offering male escorts for “anything from dinner dates to massages to bachelor parties to bachelorette parties.”
The company makes clients sign statements saying they are not renting (?) the men for sex, but I bet that rule will be broken quite often. (Quoth the company, “In the event that sexual activity occurs, it is beyond the scope of our financial agreement and is between two consenting adults.”)

What: The Security and Risk Analysis Club (SRA Club) is hosting its second event in its Virtualization Series.  On Thursday, January 29th, the SRA Club held a LEONIDAS Virtual Learning Environment Seminar to teach students about virtual machines, a new technology that is rapidly changing the security world.
Now that students have familiarized themselves with virtual machines by installing them on their personal computers, they will continue to learn how virtualization is affecting security assessments from Morgan Franklin.  Speakers from Morgan Franklin will present on “The Use of Virtualization and how it changes the nature of security assessment”.
