Modest Increase in Room and Board Rates

benjaminsThe Board of Trustees announced the new cost of room and board for the 2010-2011 school year. The increase? Only $100.

According to Penn State Live, this raise is the smallest we’ve seen in a decade. The new average cost (standard double with medium meal plan) is $4,185 per semester. Phew, that’s still a fortune when you think about it.

Possible reasons for the modest increase? Well, the University did save an annual $700,000 by cutting its landline telephone service, as well as closing the telegraph stations and typewriter labs.

Student payments, not state funds, pay for housing renovations. These price increases will eventually go towards a revamping of Pollock dining commons in spring 2011 (Will it replace Simmons as the healthy dining option?).
