Rain Can’t Stop Awareness

The downpour that soaked the bottoms of jeans and filled campus with colorful umbrellas could not completely stop Campus Night Out Thursday.

Originally, the event was scheduled for Old Main Patio, but hours before it started, the Student Life & Diversity Committee of UPUA moved it to the first floor of the HUB.

What’s one way to get a college student to pay attention to what you have to say?

“Free Rita’s!” screamed the people in charge, sporting black t-shirts with bright pink letters. Free t-shirts sat between the two tubs of Italian ice.

Pamphlets lined the two tables that were set up. The University Park Undergraduate Association table, where the Rita’s ice and t-shirts sat, held a stack of pamphlets about Association for India’s Development. The group meets every Thursday at 6 p.m. in 370 Willard.

The other table supplied information about Commission for Women, an organization that wants to stop violence against women. One statistic available was that 18 percent of women age 18 to 24 reported having experienced forced sexual intercourse at least once in their lives. Another paper showed the statistics of alcohol-related sexual consequences. One packet was targeted for men, in a move to end violence against women.

While the situation was not what was originally planned, the two tables were kept busy by students who just sought shelter from the rain and who wanted to know more.

Celebrate 100 Years of Social Intercourse

100 years ago, before the time of social media, and before Cosmopolitan magazine, there was the Penn State Cosmopolitan Club. Today, students can partake in International Education Week from Nov. 15-19 to bolster up those same feelings from yesteryear. And you don’t even have to pay dues.
