The conference, which will take place March 2, 2014 in Schwab Auditorium, has become a staple at Penn State and brings together innovators and thinkers to share ideas worth spreading.

Cumberland Posey, one of Penn State’s first black athletes — some say he was the first — , only played professionally for a few years because he discovered his talent was in team management. His business skills made the Homestead Grays one of the most successful teams in Negro league history. It’s been said he had a keen eye for choosing young players to develop into star athletes, with Posey having the record to prove it. Posey’s team won nine Negro National League championships from 1937 to 1945, including two world titles.

The Nittany Lions entered their seventh conference game of the season with a 1-5 record that just as easily could have been a 5-1 record. Penn State’s previous five games had been decided by four points or less, with the Nittany Lions losing four of those Big Ten matchups. Tonight’s games in Columbus was just as close, but Penn State was able to win its second conference game in a row with a comeback overtime victory over the #23 Ohio State Buckeyes in a game that looked to be over late in the second half.

Penn State women’s volleyball assistant coach Steve Aird has officially been named the head coach of the Maryland Terrapins program on Wednesday, according to the athletics website. Aird has been as assistant with the Nittany Lions national championship-winning program for the past two seasons, previously serving as Penn State’s Director of Operations during the 2007 season.
Since their formation last Spring, the Penn State Storm Chase Team has been hard at work preparing for their summer trip to the Midwest to chase storms and try to see a tornado or two. In addition to a preliminary trip this past summer to train the officers, there have been several small trips in the fall when severe weather threatened near Happy Valley.
The Ultimate ESPN 300 annual list is out, and Penn State makes another strong showing. The list ranks the top college football prospects since 2006, based upon ESPN’s grade and projection coming out of high school and actual college performance. Basically, it ranks which players lived up to the hype.

I’m talking, of course, about Jesse Scott, a down-to-earth 31-year old Penn State Ph.D. student who likes to cook, go dancing with his wife Laura, and watch Doctor Who in his free time. Work time for Scott, however, is a good deal more serious. He chairs the University Park Allocation Committee, which allocates about $4 million in funding to student organizations throughout the year.
