Join Onward State: Spring 2015 Applications

If you’re looking at this post, you probably have some interest in joining Penn State’s premier student media outlet: Onward State. We’re happy to inform you that with the spring semester quickly approaching, there is room on our staff for new members.

Whether you want to be a writer, photographer, videographer, copy editor, or graphic designer, we’re interested in bringing talented and ambitious students into the fold here at Onward State. The application is below, so if you’re dying to get started, scroll on down. But in the mean time, here’s some information that might help answer questions you have about what joining Onward State would entail.

First of all, don’t be scared away if you aren’t a journalism major or if you have a ton of interest in news writing without the experience to match your motivation. We’re a student media outlet, not the New York Times, so as long as you are willing to learn, we are willing to show you the ropes. We’re primarily searching for writers in the Student Life — anything from Greek Life to entertainment — and Penn State News — anything from administration to crime reporting — categories, although we don’t pigeonhole anyone into one category or beat. You can review a concert on Monday and write an opinion piece on the football team Friday if that’s what inspires you. If you are more interested in the grammatical and technical aspects of writing, you can help shape and mold our content as a copy editor.

In addition to writers, we’re looking to add on to our visual staff with photographers, videographers, and graphic designers. Our photographers shoot concerts at the Bryce Jordan Center, help compile stock images of Penn State’s beautiful campus, and more. The video staff produces high-quality documentary-style news videos, visual profiles of local bands, and more. Our graphic designers allow us to more creatively present the news while occasionally Photoshopping a quirky graphic or two for social media. And if you’re a writer who also likes to take pictures and has a knack for Photoshop, feel free to apply in multiple areas.

If you want to join our esteemed organization, fill out the application below by Friday, Jan. 16, which is the last day of the first week of classes. We’ll reach out to candidates for interviews shortly after that date. If you have any questions, you can e-mail them to [email protected].

We look forward to hearing from you!
