A Genius Breakdown Of The THON 2017 Line Dance

0

2016 was eventful, to say the least. The line dance usually does a solid job of summing everything up, though, and this year’s is no exception. Love it or hate it, the THON 2017 line dance is here.

We already gave you the straight up lyrics — here’s a Genius-style breakdown of the verses:

Verse 1:

Blue and White, Forever True / Penn State grows, whoa that’s new

[Penn State’s incoming freshman class could be the largest in school history]
East begins its renovations / Canyon — new location.

[Parts of East are almost unrecognizable now, and they paved paradise and put Canyon Pizza where Canyon Wings used to be.]
Dear Mike, We miss you most / Favorite mailman leaves the post.

[This year we said goodbye to a legend — Mike the Mailman. Enjoy your retirement full of home-cooked breakfast, Mike!]
All-In movement takes the lead / Lion’s Pantry seeks to feed

[The “We Are All In” movement to promote diversity and inclusion kicked off at Penn State, and the class of 2017 picked Lion’s Pantry funding as its class gift.]
Target is the spot / LionPATH can we not?

[A Target finally opened up downtown. As for LionPATH, you know how we feel about the worst website in existence.]
Storm the field, scream and shout / Ohio State gets White’d Out.

[Penn State’s underdog victory over Ohio State that sparked a Cinderella season will never get old.]
Wrestling, champs again / Nittany Lions win Big Ten.

[Powerhouse Penn State wrestling captured the Big Ten regular season title with a 45-6 win over Maryland.]
Smell the roses, bags are packed / Penn State football, Guess who’s back.

[Penn State football had its most prolific season in years that ended in a trip to the Rose Bowl.]

*I think Penn State hockey got snubbed. The team rose from unranked to No. 1 in the country.

Verse 2:

Aleppo seeks light in the dark / Orlando’s Pulse beats in our hearts.

[Once Syria’s largest city, Aleppo has turned into a battleground. Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, was the scene of the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in U.S. history.]
England peace out E.U / Hop a flight to Cuba too.

[The U.K. left the European Union via Brexit, and then-President Barack Obama lifted restrictions on Cuban rum and cigars.]
Orca’s will be swimming free, Space X in the galaxy.
Election puts Trump on top / Obama’s out MIC DROP.

[Donald Trump became POTUS. Here are some of his tweets about Penn State. former President Obama was a huge fan of the mic drop.]

Final 5 strong and bold / Phelps, Ledecky made of gold.

[The Summer Olympics were a saving grace for 2016 in America — Michael Phelps took home five gold medals, Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles took home four apiece.]
Float like a butterfly sting like a bee / Muhammad’s Legacy.
Mr. Palmer takes his final drive / Peyton Manning says goodbye

[Prominent celebrity deaths seemed too common over the course of the year — Muhammad Ali and Arnold Palmer passed away. Peyton Manning is still alive, but he did retire from football.]
Great year to be a Cub / curse is lifted, fly the dub.
Pens lift the Stanley cup / Leister City turns it up.
Cleveland wins the rings / that kid from Akron still the King.

[The Chicago Cubs won a World Series for the first time since 1908. LeBron James is still the GOAT.]

Verse 3:

Snapchat makes us dogs and deers / Stranger Things have happened here.

[It seems like Snapchat introduces a new filter every day. These were especially fun during the election. The second part of this refers to new Netflix series Stranger Things.]

Raindrop, drop top / Where’s the closest PokeStop?

[The song “Bad and Boujee” by Migos took off this year, and for about two weeks this summer everyone was obsessed with Pokémon Goan app that let us live our childhood dreams as Ash.]
Gilmore Girls continue story, Splash around with finding dory.
Leo gets his Oscar win / Harambe! Make a meme.

[Leonardo DiCaprio finally got an Oscar after years of churning out classics. There were many memes this year, but Harambe, gorilla of the people, stands out. A Harambe Cheeto was just sold on eBay for nearly $100,000. Come on, people.]
Closer playing on repeat / running man on that beat.

You could not escape “Closer” by the Chainsmokers or “Juju on that Beat” last year.
Is it Broadway, is it school, Hamilton makes history cool.
Leia’s force will remain / Prince sings in the purple rain.

[Legends Carrie Fisher and Prince passed away as well in 2016. Rest in peace.]
Welcome back to life Jon Snow, Sorry if you didn’t know

[Who knew we’d find a spoiler in this year’s line dance? If you haven’t watched yet, Jon Snow is back on Game of Thrones. Sorry.]
WHY IS EVERYTHING SO LIT / WHAT WAS THIS YEARS BIGGEST HIT?

[“Lit” was definitely the word of the year. There are a few different interpretations, take it how you will.]

*Dance Break*

Verse 4: THON

BJC, now’s our chance / Show the families why we dance

[It’s all about the Four Diamonds families and the kids this weekend. We dance for them.]
Past and present volunteers / Four Diamonds 40 years

[Four Diamonds and THON are celebrating a 40 year partnership this year!]
Penn State students show they care / One mission we all share
Diamonds guide the way / We will celebrate one day
Rise Up! Strength defines you / Wisdom, support behind you
Courage to face unknowns / Honesty leads you home
Fireflies in the night / Today we spark tomorrow’s light
Boundaries broken, futures bright / Hope within, we ignite.

[THON 2016’s logo was Believe Beyond Boundaries, this year’s is Igniting Hope Within.]
