Onward State Meets President Spanier

One of the fortuitous things about being on Press Row is the fact that we can sit down. Another is that we are in close proximity to the club boxes. On a quick jaunt to the concession stand, we had the opportunity to talk to President Graham Spanier about THON. Attending his 15th THON, Dr. Spanier said that he was enjoying himself. When we spoke to him, he had been at the Bryce Jordan Center for four hours. He has spent most of his time on the floor interacting with dancers and committee members. If pictures from past THONs are any indicator, a photo-op with President Spanier is in great demand.

Dr. Spanier’s favorite part of THON is the diverse entertainment that is offered over the duration, specifically the events involving the THON children.

When asked if he thought this year’s fundraising total would best last year’s, he said he had no idea. He mentioned several factors, including the economy and poor canning weather, that could cause the total to be lower than last year. On the other hand, he thought that THON kept coming up with innovative ways to raise money, including the internet and THONvelopes, so you can never really know. Could anyone have predicted last year’s tremendous THON total?

If you haven’t seen Dr. Spanier yet, he’ll be on the floor much of tomorrow, so perhaps you’ll get a chance then. If not, meditate on the fact that even the President of the University needs to wear a pass, just like anyone else.
