The University Park Allocation Committee (UPAC) met last night in the HUB to discuss and vote on two policy issues that would have increased transparency in how the organization operates.
That is, if both had passed.

If you see anyone wearing a holster around campus this week, don’t be alarmed. As a part of a national movement, Penn State students who support carrying concealed weapons on campus will be wearing these empty holsters all week to protest the campus’s ban on concealed weapons.
The national organization, known as Students for Concealed Carry (SCC), consists of “more than 43,000 college students, professors, college employees, parents of college students, and concerned citizens who believe that holders of state-issued concealed handgun licenses should be allowed the same measure of personal protection on college campuses that current laws afford them virtually everywhere else” according to their website. The organization was formed after the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

The 8th Assembly met for the first time last night with the goal of learning from past mistakes while also moving UPUA in a positive direction going forward. The first order of business, however, was electing the new chairs. Here's how it all went down:

Katelyn Mullen and her running mate, Brenden Dooley, are running unopposed in the upcoming UPUA elections, but that doesn't mean the two are short of good ideas for the student body. Here are a few of the ideas Mullen and Dooley had for the upcoming 8th Assembly:

If you've spent any time Penn State's campus, you've probably witnessed a Philly/Pittsburgh argument. It's the most pervasive rivalry on campus, with a tremendous amount of pride instilled in the fans of each city. Thousands of current and former students hail from each respective city. But which is the best? Only a top 10 list can decide.

The snow may have been coming down, but that didn't stop UPUA from having a busy and (unfortunately) long evening. With candidate registration starting in a week, UPUA really had to kick it into gear this week in order to get ready for the upcoming election season.

What we have now are two different versions of the same story. Both are based on the same facts, yet both draw very different conclusions about Paterno’s role in the scandal. It’s quite possible that the truth is somewhere between the Paterno and Freeh reports, but we’ll never actually find out because we have yet to read a report that doesn’t make broad assertions based on circumstantial evidence. It’s not exactly fair for the Penn State faithful to completely dismiss the Freeh report for editorializing on facts while embracing the Paterno report that used the same facts to show that Paterno didn’t participate in a cover up.

It's been a tough semester for UPUA so far. Two iPads nearly tore the entire assembly apart, and UPUA's vote against the new CCSG budget was pretty much deemed irrelevant when the budget proposal was passed. Despite the multiple blows, UPUA was able to swing back and have a (relatively) mistake-free week.

The day of reckoning is over for CCSG and its controversial budget proposal. At this afternoon's meeting, the Student Activity Fee Board voted (8-3-1) to recommend a new budget for the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments, which includes the contested $14,800 from the student activity fee at University Park.

Earlier this evening, UPUA representative Anthony Christina filed an Emergency Petition for a Writ of Mandamus under the authority of Article VII.
