All this week, Interfraternity Council chapters are holding open houses as part of Fall 2010 Rush Week. Each day is devoted to a certain group of fraternities, and is designed to maximize potential members’ exposure to the chapters. The second day of Rush Week brings us to a new group of fraternities, and with it a new series of events.

Joining a fraternity or sorority at Penn State is a big decision that will affect you for the rest of your college career and beyond. In order to ensure that you choose to join the correct organization, the Interfraternity Council has organized Rush Week. Rush Week is filled with events and information sessions for potential members. All events are dry and aim to focus on the brotherhood aspects of fraternities, rather than the more apparent social ones.

In an announcement this morning, the Homecoming 2010 Executive committee has selected Olympic speed skater Allison Baver as Grand Marshall. Baver, a Class of 2003 graduate of Penn State Berks, won the bronze medal in the 3000-meter short track relay event at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The Grand Marshal is the highest honor given to an alumnus as part of the Homecoming celebrations.

For the first time in the fall semester, Rec Hall was filled to capacity with a loud and boisterous crowd. But this wasn’t the typical Rec Hall event, with Alisha Glass and her cohorts laying waste to their opponents on the volleyball court. Last night, Be a Part From the Start, put on by the Lion Ambassadors, introduced the new freshman class to some of the organizations on campus as well as many of the traditions that we hold so dearly.

In an announcement sure to surprise no one, Penn State’s women’s volleyball team has been ranked preseason #1 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. The Nittany Lions are looking to win their 4th consecutive national championship and continuing to extend their record-setting 102 match winning streak.

As the football season approaches, thousands of Penn State fans serviced by Armstrong Communications and Blue Ridge communications remain without the Big Ten Network. Talks between the two parties have gone nowhere and the fans end up feeling the hurt. With no resolution in sight, DirecTV has thrown their hat into the ring, offering reduced rates for their basic package, which includes the Big Ten Network, to Armstrong and Blue Ridge customers. Blue Ridge Communications and Armstrong Communications remain the only major cable providers in Pennsylvania that have yet to offer the Big Ten Network.

The College of Information Sciences and Technology announced yesterday that David Hall, currently serving as the college’s interim dean, has been named dean of the college. Hall has served as interim dean since January 1st of this year, having stepped in for Hank Foley, who moved to the position of vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School.

At around 8PM Alaska Daylight Time last night, a small plane crashed near Bristol Bay in Alaska. Of the nine passengers on board the plane, five were killed, including long-time Alaska Senator Ted Stevens. One of the four survivors, however, was a former Penn Stater. Reuters is reporting that Sean O’Keefe and his son are among the survivors and have been airlifted to a hospital in Anchorage, about 350 miles away, for treatment.

Earlier this afternoon, President Spanier spoke with CNN news anchor Ali Velshi on the state of higher education in the United States. He weighs in on a study conducted by the College Board about the US lagging behind other developed countries in graduation rates among young adults. He believes that the US isn’t actually lagging behind but that the rest of “the world is catching up to us.”

Last Thursday U.S. Representative Glenn Thompson sent a letter to President Obama nominating Coach Joe Paterno for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Last April, State College Police Sergent Bill Muse was driving down Beaver Avenue when Penn State student Kevin Ignatuk jumped out into the street. Sgt. Muse was traveling at 36 miles per hour (in the rain) on Beaver Avenue, which has a speed limit of 25mph, and was unable to stop his police SUV, hitting Ignatuk. Ignatuk had to be airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. Shortly after the crash, Pennsylvania State Police charged Sgt. Muse with driving too fast in poor conditions.

According to Cleverly + Associates, a health care consulting firm, the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center can be considered one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States. Cleverly + Associates uses a proprietary methodology called the Community Value Index to rank hospitals which considers the value the hospital adds to its community. The Index takes into consideration factors such as financial strength and reinvestment, cost of care, pricing and quality. However this ranking contrasts a report released by US News and World Report rating the top hospitals in the United States.

For 75 years, Kodachrome has been the film of choice for thousands of film photographers around the world. It has been used to take some of the most iconic images of our time. Last year, Kodak, the maker of the film, announced that it would be ceasing production of the most well known film type of all time (it’s even got a Paul Simon song about it), it saddened a photographer who had been using the product for over 35 years.
