Student Life News and Blogs

Student Life represents all the elements of the college experience at Penn State University. Creepy professors, drink specials, the location of the secret Coca-Cola machine, tomfoolery, chicanery, bedlam, and more.

0 Walking 101

I’m a firm believer in nonverbal communication. A relaxed head-nod or a strategically raised eyebrow can speak volumes to the recipient.

When we walk on campus or downtown, we unconsciously send messages about ourselves to everyone we pass. Some of these messages are personality-driven and some are alcohol-infused. Either way, it’s fun to make assumptions.

0 Campus Gyms Leave Much to be Desired

There are roughly 44,000 students on this campus and we have two legitimate gyms to pick from: Rec Hall and the White Building. Rec Hall’s maximum occupancy is 240, the White Building is 210. Essentially if for every 100 people at Penn State, one goes to the gym at a certain time, both facilities would be at capacity at that time. That just isn’t enough space. Check out more after the jump!

0 Comm GRAD Forum to Discuss Occupy Wall Street

It’s been several months since the first tents sprang up in Zuccotti Park, but the anti-corporate Occupy Wall Street movement isn’t far from anyone’s radar. The first Comm GRAD forum of the semester revolves around Occupy Wall Street and will be held on Tuesday, January 31st, in the Warring Commons West Study Lounge, from 12-1:15 pm.

0 Joe Paterno Honored in Student Rap Song

The Penn State community has been grieving the loss of Joe Paterno differently. Some students assembled on the snow-covered lawn of Old Main Sunday night with candles in hand. Some spoke a short prayer around the JoePa statue outside Beaver Stadium. One Penn State freshman, though, decided to pay homage to the late Joe Paterno with a rap song/Youtube video titled “Legends Never Die.”

0 The Five BEST Classrooms on Campus

Last semester, I sojourned across campus to find the five worst classrooms. We all had a good laugh at how awful they all were! But what about the unsung heroes? What about the great classrooms? Well, dear reader, fear no more. Here’s my breakdown of the five best classrooms.

0 Keeping the Bros at Bay: A Man Repeller Inspired Challenge

How would slobbering, blacked out frat bros respond to a man repeller outfit? Would the contrast from all the other practically naked chicks entice them or would they just think I was there by mistake? I mean. can you imagine if I showed up somewhere in shoulder pads or boyfriend jeans? Not only would I go home alone, but probably in a straight jacket as well. I decided to give it a try last Thursday night (aka Thirsty Thurs of Sylly Week), and here’s what happened.

0 UPUA Does…Nothing

Admittedly, last night was the first time I have attended a UPUA meeting in nearly a year, and it was also my first time actually having to pay attention (which is harder than it may seem). Any reasonable person, like myself, would come in with high expectations. I was hoping for an enlivened Anthony Weiner-esque speech from President T.J. Bard, a Joe Biden signature f-word slip up from VP Courtney Lennartz, or perhaps even a leftist Kucinich style outburst from fan-favorite Elias Warren. After all, galvanizing democracy is what I have come to know from my student-leaders, why should I imagine any different?

0 OS Goes to the Burger King Opening

I have not frequently eaten at Burger King for quite some time. The last two times before now were April 29,2010 and November 18, 2011. The former was while returning to State College after the NFL draft; the latter was on the road home for Thanksgiving break, both somewhat rare occasions. That is part of the reason I was very intrigued for a Burger King to open up inside the HUB

0 Yammer: The Useful Social Network

Yammer. Even though it launched in 2008, I had only heard of it this semester. And it is actually very interesting. I’m not tech savvy and unfortunately it doesn’t come with instructions but professors on campus are trying to incorporate it into activity amongst themselves and their students.
