2 UPUA Election Season Begins, Three Presidential Tickets Announced

It’s mid-March, which for Penn State can only mean one thing — it’s UPUA election season.

Campaigning kicked off today at 7 a.m., and you have no doubt already received a barrage of Facebook invitations from various campaigns. With current UPUA President T.J. Bard announcing his intention to not seek re-election, three executive tickets qualified for the ballot and have their sights set on replacing him.

0 Penn State Police Report Paternoville Sign Stolen

Can significant days in Penn State’s academic calendar just be normal? The first day of Thanksgiving break brought the unfortunate news that Joe Paterno had lung cancer. The beginning of winter break coincided with a post-practice fight between Matt McGloin and Curtis Drake which left McGloin concussed. Now today, at the beginning of spring break, news broke that the sign for Paternoville outside Beaver Stadium was knocked down by a driver and stolen.

0 Not Your Typical Spring Break

While many Penn Staters will be travelling to exotic beaches and foreign countries for a week come Friday, a few students have chosen to take the non-traditional route for Spring Break 2012. Not to say that there is anything wrong with taking a week off to enjoy yourself and participate in potentially regrettable activities for seven straight days, but some students have decided to make a difference in the lives of others next week.

0 UPUA Finishes Prematurely

It was supposed to signify the beginning of the end. When it broke last night that President T.J. Bard would not be running for re-election, I anticipated a Presidential address for the ages, complete with tears, reflection, and nostalgia. What happened next, however, is symbolic of the altruistic nature of Bard’s presidency.

0 State Patty’s Day: A Whole Lotta Green [Photos]

Fellow photographer John O’Brien and I decided to brave the cold weather and aimlessly wandering drunken mobs to take some photographs–for the sake of never having to use that same balcony photograph for each SPD post. Green is flowing through the streets of State College, evidence that despite evidence to slow it down, State Patty’s Day has not been stopped. Check out the slideshow below, to see some of the colorful characters walking around downtown.

Ah, State Patty’s Day, the not-so-wonderful student holiday created for the purpose of solely getting hammered before St. Patrick’s Day. 0 Help Put the Yo(U) Back in UPUA

Are you a wanna-be politician? Does the idea of getting to play around with $120,000 excite you? Do you have an a wrinkly suite or a collection of repulsive ties? Are you a registered student at Penn State – University Park and free on Wednesday nights from 8-10 p.m.?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, perhaps you should consider running for a position in your student government, the University Park Undergraduate Association.

0 Onward Date: #OS210 More Than A Date

It began as an idea centered around two people; it morphed into a phenomenon. Based on a compatibility given to several participants within the Onward State staff, Drew Balis and Ally Greer were matched up to go on an Onward State Valentine’s Day date. During an OS Super Bowl party, we decided that the location of said date would take at the ever popular Café 210 West. At this moment, the date was still five days away, and we elected to spice things up in the form of a Double Date, a little Number One Compatibility Magic in the form of Tyler Hoy and Evan Kalikow.

0 Valentine’s Day Menu for the Single College Student

To avoid the constant reminder that I will not be being wined and dined on Valentine’s Day, I think it’s always best to stay away from all restaurants, ice cream shops, and any other date destinations. Because of this decision, along with the fact that, to single people, Valentine’s Day is better known as “Comfort Food Day,” I have put together a little shopping list of all the foods you will need to survive this Valentine’s Day from the comfort of your couch.

0 Hip-Hop Trio Seeks “Common Ground”

To those in the rap game, State College is a fractured scene. In true musical Adam Smith philosophy, the hip-hop culture has been suppressed by self-interest and hit-it-big egos of local rappers. But for the entertainment trio, Common Ground, being the glue that binds the music scene is just as rewarding as making that Jay-Z cash flow. Learn more about the pioneers of hip-hop unity after the jump.

0 President T.J. Bard Unveils Six Points for Change

Among the usual banter and uselessness that most UPUA meetings encompass, the Presidential remarks last night from T.J. Bard were a refreshing example of leadership. Bard introduced “6 Points for Change” for the Penn State administration. Signed by T.J. Bard of UPUA, Pete Khoury of CCSG, and Jon Lozano of GSA, the six points advocate for more student involvement in the way the University operates.

0 State Patty’s Dangerous to Image After Scandal

It’s February and THON is just around the corner. And we all know what that means: State Patty’s Day is lurking right behind it. There has been a lot of discussion over the last several years about the harms this “holiday” brings along with the drinking and merriment, including the potential disgrace to the reputation of our school and community. But this year, that concern takes on a whole new tone. So we at Onward State want you to take a moment and ask yourselves, “Do I care about the image of Penn State?”

0 Professional Swag Shopping at the Career Fair

You can always tell that the career fair has arrived when flocks of students in wrinkly suits are seen carrying around bright tote bags filled to the top with cup koozies, water bottles, pens, notepads, and t-shirts. Yesterday, I was on a mission: No, not to get a job, but to find the best free swag the career fair had to offer.
