4 Senior Writes Final Column

Senior columns, with all their melodrama and platitudes, usually leave me eye-rolling and shaking my head with a vigor usually reserved for study abroad blog posts. But, as I graduate a week from today, I figured I should give it a go myself. Rather than discuss the origins of Onward State like Evan,  I’d just like to briefly thank a few individuals who have defined my Penn State experience.

5 10 Questions With Ludacris [VIDEO]

When I first heard that hip-hop star Ludacris would be performing at Movin’ On this year, I jumped at the chance to interview him. After many emails, a lot of patience, and just a little bit of luck, Luda finally agreed to let me as him a few questions. Check out the video after the jump to find out more about his salary, his driving habits, and his past experience as a Blockbuster Video employee.

66 I Don’t Care About Your Study Abroad

Remember when all your friends left to study abroad and it was so melodramatic, like “Ugh, what am I gonna do without you?! I’m gonna miss you so much, don’t worry you’re gonna have the time of your life!!” Vom. The truth is life went on just fine without all of them but you can’t just say that. Because they’re going to gush all about how “fabulous” and “cultural” life abroad was (tell me about hostels again, please!?) and you have to come up with some bullshit to reciprocate when they ask, “So what did I miss out on??”

20 What’s Up With the THON Overall and Nickelback?

Last month, Will Martin was named Overall Chairperson of THON 2013. This seemed like a pretty solid decision, as he was THON 2012’s OPP Overall and seemed very enthusiastic about THON. After he was announced as the THON 2013 Overall, I went back and read Ryan Kristobak’s profile on him. One part stuck out like a sore thumb. Find out which part after the jump.

9 Study Spots: Top 10 Hidden Gems

Let’s face it, unless you’re a closet nerd like myself, the only time you’re concerned with where to study is during finals week.

I cannot study unless there are comfortable chairs and pleasant surroundings; I am thoroughly convinced that the quality of study is directly proportional to the quality of the cushion in your chair. So since I’m done with my finals on Sunday, I figured I’d release a few gems — the best study spots around campus. Some places you’d never think of and some buildings you’ve probably never been in, but they’re all excellent places to study (most have comfy chairs).

6 The Top 5 Worst Roommates at Penn State

College is a monumental step in anyone’s life. You go from living under the watchful eyes of your parents into the world of cooking and cleaning (sometimes) for yourself and living with others. Some get lucky and end up with great roommates who become lifelong friends. Others aren’t so lucky.

0 Full Circle: Dana’s Senior Column

When I wrote my first post for Onward State, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I thought it would be a fun little distraction, working with some friends from orientation week to stick up a certain finger to the status quo, but I could never have guessed what a profound impact Onward State would have on me.

3 Work Hard, Play Harder — Mel’s Senior Post

My freshman year I came to Penn State expecting the best time of my life. Since then, I have met some of my best friends I will ever have, some of the most brilliant professors I will ever have the opportunity to interact with, and some of the most talented people around. I had the opportunity to interview Russell Brand and Jonah Hill, photograph a Penn State vs. Michigan game under the lights, and party with the best people in the world. And I don’t regret a minute of it. After the jump is a summary of some quotes from important people in my life that have guided me through my wonderful experience at PSU.

4 Onward State Chimes in on YOLO

It seemingly began with Drake’s “The Motto” and ever since, the phrase YOLO (You Only Live Once) has taken on a life of its own within the teenage and college age generation over the past few months. At this point, it is rare that you can walk campus or scroll a social media sight without hearing or seeing “YOLO” at least once. Below, several Onward State staff members will share their thoughts on the use of the phrase and whether it deserves the place that it seems to currently have in college life and society.

0 Ten Questions with CCSG President Ben Clark

On April 14th, Ben Clark was elected president of the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (@CCSG_Staff), the governing body for, you guessed it, the various student governments of the commonwealth campuses. I had the opportunity to sit down with Ben and to ask him a few question about what he does.

46 Hazing: An Unspoken Problem Not Gone

Hazing is wrong. There, I said it. It’s one of the most polarizing issues on college campuses yet nobody wants to talk about it. It’s like racism in modern American society. We know that it’s still an issue, yet we want to pretend it isn’t. Well, hazing is still an issue, and it’s not going to stop unless we do talk about it. The vicious cycle of being hazed and then believing that one has earned the right to haze will never stop unless people come out and talk about it.

0 And to Think That I Saw It on Pollock Road

I don’t do drugs, nor do I condone their use. I prefer to live my life according to the words of Marcus Garvey. “The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.”

But dudes, Friday was 4/20, the high holy day of the stoner population. And I don’t know what those guys were on, but I thought it spread across campus and I had caught a whiff of it. I saw some freaky stuff on Pollock Road by the HUB, and second-hand dope seemed like the only logical explanation.

2 Where to Take the Perfect Graduation Photos

Although none of us really want to talk about it, graduation weekend is right around the corner. Graduating from Penn State is something that most of us seniors aren’t looking forward to, but it is also something we must do, and something that we will never want to forget. As emotional as it might be, the weeks leading up to graduation are the time to go buy that cap and gown (you can do it!) and head to the best spots on campus and create those permanent graduation memories. This can definitely be a very stressful time, so I decided to compile a list of places to hit as you go through your photo shoot.

3 Kony 2012: Remember the Night Still Happened

To refresh your memory, Kony is the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda. His forces kidnap children and turn them into soldiers or prostitutes. Last month, Invisible Children released a 29-minute video called Kony 2012 to increase widespread awareness about the fugitive by April 20, 2012. It went viral, and received over 100 million views in six days.

3 Skipping Class? Don’t Burn Yourself on Social Media

Beautiful weather has finally returned, and the end of the semester is so very near. This can only mean one thing for most Penn State students – Daylong Season. Before you tweet those Instagram photos of your bros getting iced or Tebowing, remember how connected your parents and teachers are these days. That said, here are a few tips on how not to get caught daylonging on social media.

0 Back to Cafe Laura: Baked to Perfection

Unfortunately, my two original partners in crime could not make the second adventure to Cafe Laura due to paint parties and matzo times. But I am a woman of my word, so I went back to Cafe Laura to the same Se7en: Food to Die For meal to see how the HRIM students improved from their first meal to their second. Let’s get critiquing.

13 Best Grass on Campus

Well, we’re starting to have better weather now and you know what that means – time to chill in the grass. Whether you need a quick nap before your next class or just want to study in the sun, Penn State has many great spots to lay out.
