The Future of “Gen Eds” at Penn State

Open Student Forum about Gen Eds: March 14th 7:00 p.m. in 165 Willard

Did you know that you are required to take 45 credits of Gen Eds? This is 3 semesters of coursework! Gen Eds are important to create well-rounded students but do you currently use them to make your college education more meaningful?

What if you could take a series of Gen Ed courses that fit within an overarching theme, like Evil? or Food? Or Disease? A broad topic like these could bring in the perspectives from scientists, sociologists, psychologists, statisticians, artists, writers, historians, philosophers… and tie together courses in a way that was purposeful.

Interested? Join faculty from the College of Science and the College of the Liberal Arts for a brainstorming session on how a Gen Ed thematic series of courses might be constructed. This event is hosted by The Eberly College of Science and The College of Liberal Arts Student Councils.

    It’s called a minor.

Classes in the Arts (GA) should be more accessible to under-class men and women in my opinion. I am currently looking at Fall 2013 schedule, and most of the interesting sounding GA courses are already completely filled up, usually because only a small number of slots exist in the first place. For example, Art 050 (Intro to Painting), has a total capacity of only 60 students. In a campus of 40,000 students, is that enough? Same thing exists with Music classes. You can’t find a seat in Beginners Piano, but, hey, you want Mallet Ensemble? Plenty of openings there!… Theater, Kinesiology offerings – just as tough to get into. I would bend over backwards to get into Yoga, but it is impossible… The reality is, for freshmen and sophomores, all the good GA classes are unavailable… Should a student have to wait until senior year to have a little fun? C’mon, Penn State, please…. Give us more GA classes!!!

Not really sure why you say women should have more access to GA’s…

oh, sorry, that is just a typo really, I merely meant underclassmen and underclasswomen, in an awkward attempt to be politically correct…..
