Tips For Canning Weekend #2

Canning Weekend #2 is but hours away, and everyone is packing up their winter coats and sleeping bags for a weekend of fun and fulfillment. However, if ever there was a time when representation of THON, and Penn State, was most vital, it’s now. While all Penn State students and alumni understand that THON has nothing to do with the Sandusky scandal, the same cannot necessarily be said by those outside our community. Some passers-by may see canners holding signs that say “Penn State” and “kids” on them and immediately make assumptions. Some may even vocalize their conclusions, and we must decide how to properly handle such a situation. Here are a few tips from THON Overall, Elaine Tanella:

This weekend as you travel from State College to fundraise for THON, please remember why you are standing in front of stores and on sidewalks with cans. Never forget the children of The Four Diamonds Fund who are truly grateful for your efforts.

THON is proud to be a Penn State student organization and will do what it can to help rebuild faith in the Penn State name.  In light of the current situation at Penn State, we must respect the investigative process and allow it to take its course. You may encounter people who have certain opinions or who try to engage you in a debate about what is taking place at Penn State. We ask that you do not engage in any debate and simply walk away if someone tries to escalate the situation. Since everything you do and say reflects upon all Penn State students and alumni everywhere, be cautious and humble.

Additionally, if you are approached by members of the media, remember that your words and actions represent THON. Please also direct media to call Kirsten Quisenberry, the Overall Public Relations Chairperson at 724-316-0238 with any questions.

Below are some facts that you may find useful to know when representing THON this weekend:

Fast Facts about THON

  • 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of THON– a yearlong fundraising and awareness campaign for the fight against pediatric cancer.
  • Since partnering with The Four Diamonds Fund in 1977, THON has raised more than $78 million for the fight against pediatric cancer.
  • THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, engaging more than 15,000 student volunteers each year.
  •  Last year alone, THON raised more than $9.56 million and donated more than 96% of the funds raised directly to The Four Diamonds Fund.
  • The Fund supports families battling pediatric cancer by picking up where insurance leaves off and supporting innovative research.

Remember that in order to participate in canning, the following rules must be understood and followed by all canners:

  • Do not solicit donations between moving or unmoving traffic or on road medians.
  • Do not stand in an area where oncoming traffic cannot see you.
  • Wear bright, visible and warm clothing.
  • Contact boroughs, municipalities, and cities in advance about permits required for solicitation at road intersections.
  • Check the area for store-fronts before registering street corners; store fronts are a more reliable point of solicitation.

Jim’s Army & Navy: The Greatest Store Ever

For those of you who have ventured onto the west side of Beaver Avenue, there is a good chance you have passed by Jim’s Army & Navy. If you are one of those people, your first thought when passing by Jim’s was most likely, “What the hell is going on in this store?” When a store’s window display boasts handcuffs (they even come in pink), switchblades, throwing stars, machetes, other swords, and ammunition, you really have no choice but to be utterly confounded. Little did I know that I was about to walk into the greatest store ever.
