Seven More Penn State Student-Athletes Test Positive For Coronavirus

Seven more Penn State student-athletes have tested positive for the coronavirus, Penn State Athletics announced Wednesday. The update brings the university’s total to eight positive cases since testing began earlier this summer.

Sixty-six coronavirus tests remain pending at this time.

Each student who tested positive will enter a 14-day quarantine before undergoing additional tests and resuming organized activities. Penn State will also implement contact-tracing to identify individuals who may have crossed paths with those affected. Identified individuals will also be quarantined, even if they’re asymptomatic.

To date, Penn State has administered 466 coronavirus tests. The 178 student-athletes tested in the university’s last two bi-weekly updates received negative results. However, one student-athlete tested positive last week, becoming the first known athlete to do so.

“We expect our student-athletes to follow CDC guidelines for limiting the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks, practicing social distancing, washing their hands regularly and not gathering in large groups,” Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications Kris Petersen said.

Last month, Penn State vice president for intercollegiate athletics Sandy Barbour announced the department will disclose testing figures every other Wednesday.

“We obviously have been testing our student-athletes and staff upon their return,” Barbour said on a call on July 1. “As a university and an athletic department, we’ve made a decision that we’ll report those results every two weeks.”

Penn State Athletics began its phased return to campus on June 8 when 75 football student-athletes arrived in Happy Valley. In the weeks since, additional phases of men’s and women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball student-athletes have also returned to campus.
