Penn State Football’s Donovan Johnson To Miss 2020 Season

Penn State football cornerback Donovan Johnson will miss the 2020 season due to an injury he suffered earlier this summer, a spokesperson for the team confirmed Saturday.

Johnson seemed to have a bright future ahead of him when he arrived in Happy Valley in 2017, but he’s had to deal with injuries throughout his Nittany Lion career. As a redshirt sophomore this past fall, the cornerback suffered an upper-body injury during Penn State’s second game of the season against Pitt and missed the rest of the season.

The former four-star recruit from Detroit, Michigan was listed as a starting cornerback opposite Tariq Castro-Fields on the Nittany Lions’ spring depth chart this past April. He’s appeared in a total of just 14 games over the past two seasons, but has 18 total tackles to his name along with three pass deflections.

Johnson impressed during his 2018 redshirt freshman season with a couple of solid performances, including his game against Michigan State that included a career-high four tackles and a pass deflection.

Despite Johnson’s injury, Brent Pry’s defensive unit still has a good amount of depth at secondary. As the veteran of the group, Castro-Fields is set to be a leader for the cornerbacks, while Marquis Wilson and Keaton Ellis both showed promise as freshmen last season.
