Penn State Football: ‘We Want To Play’

Thanks to some late-night tweets Saturday, it’s no mystery how some Penn State football student-athletes feel about the upcoming season.

A number of players, including Sean Clifford and Pat Freiermuth, voiced their support for the impending college football season using a slew of tweets touting Penn State’s health protocols.

Some simply used the hashtag “I Want To Play,” while others tweeted eerily similar messages supporting the team’s staff and policies.

The student-athletes’ tweets are likely a direct response to circulating rumors surrounding the potential cancellation of the upcoming season. According to Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Thamel, there’s some “presidential momentum” among Big Ten presidents to cancel the upcoming season. However, no decision has been made yet.

Additionally, the Big Ten announced Saturday it wouldn’t allow teams to move forward with fully padded practices for the time being. The conference said it wants to continue evaluating the pandemic before moving forward, even though the season is scheduled to kick off in just under four weeks.

Earlier this week, more than 1,000 Big Ten football players issued a joint statement demanding the conference and NCAA adopt new policies to keep players safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. Requests included granting automatic medical redshirts for those who miss games, preserving eligibility and scholarships for those who opt out of the season, and providing increased financial aid to those in need.

To date, eight Penn State student-athletes have tested positive for the coronavirus since testing began earlier this summer. However, it’s unclear how many, if any, were a part of Penn State football. Penn State should release its next biweekly testing update on Wednesday, August 12.
