Sixteen Penn Staters Cut From NFL Rosters Ahead Of 2020 Season

Yesterday, the NFL’s 32 teams were required to trim their rosters down to 53 players ahead of the 2020 season. Now that the dust has settled, 16 former Penn State football stars will be searching for new teams after not making the cut.

Among them is former Nittany Lions quarterback Tommy Stevens. Stevens was drafted in the seventh round by the New Orleans Saints in the 2020 NFL Draft and made the switch to tight end during training camp. He appeared to have a better chance at making the roster because of the position switch, but that evidently wasn’t true.

Additionally, Robert Windsor was waived by the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts used a sixth-round pick on the high-motored defensive lineman but will now move on from him before the season even begins.

Here’s the full list of Penn Staters who were released prior to Saturday’s 4 p.m. deadline, along with their former teams:

  • TE Ross Travis — New York Jets (Penn State hoops alum!)
  • DE Shareef Miller — Philadelphia Eagles
  • CB Grant Haley — New York Giants
  • CB Trevor Williams — Philadelphia Eagles
  • WR Saeed Blacknall — Pittsburgh Steelers
  • WR DeAndre Thompkins — Pittsburgh Steelers
  • OL AQ Shipley — Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • DE Anthony Zettel — Minnesota Vikings
  • TE Nick Bowers — Las Vegas Raiders
  • LB Jan Johnson — Houston Texans
  • WR Brandon Polk — Los Angeles Rams
  • WR Juwan Johnson — New Orleans Saints
  • OL Steven Gonzalez — Arizona Cardinals
  • S Garrett Taylor — Buffalo Bills
  • QB/TE Tommy Stevens — New Orleans Saints
  • DL Robert Windsor — Indianapolis Colts

It is important to note, however, that these players could end up on another NFL team again sometime soon, as there are still a lot of moving parts with each NFL roster ahead of the season’s start. Additionally, all 32 teams have a 16-player practice squad that they will need to fill in the coming days.

It wasn’t all bad news for Nittany Lions across the league amid NFL roster cuts. Former Penn State wideout Dan Chisena made the Vikings’ 53-man roster after making the switch to safety last weekend. Additionally, punter Blake Gillikin made the Saints’ initial roster after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 draft.

Sam Ficken won the Jets’ kicker job, beating out former Cowboys kicker Brett Maher. Other Nittany Lions, including Trace McSorley and Amani Oruwariye, will stay put with the Ravens and Lions, respectively, for their second pro seasons.

Former Penn State linebacker Jason Cabinda also made the Detroit Lions’ initial 53-man roster. Meanwhile, bona fide stars such as Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders will continue serving as key contributors to their respective teams this season.
