Saquon Barkley Sustains Torn ACL, Will Miss Rest Of Season

Saquon Barkley will officially miss the rest of the 2020-21 NFL season.

The former Penn State football star tore his ACL in the second quarter of the New York Giants’ contest with the Chicago Bears this past Sunday. He needed to be carted off the field after he went down, but the Giants were initially hoping for a more minor injury.

New York confirmed Monday Barkley sustained a season-ending ACL tear. He’ll undergo surgery to deal with the injury “in the near future.”

Barkley played only five quarters of football this season before the injury, but didn’t play up to his standards to open the third year of his NFL career. The Nittany Lion didn’t do much in the Giants’ season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as some serious offensive line struggles allowed him just six rushing yards on 15 attempts.

The running back’s biggest play of the night came on a screen pass that he took for 38 yards and finished with a patented hurdle to midfield.

Before sustaining his injury against the Bears, Barkley had four rushes worth 28 yards.

Barkley was one of many NFL stars to get hurt during week two, while multiple other Nittany Lions missed games due to injuries. The Carolina Panthers’ Yetur Gross-Matos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Chris Godwin both missed their games Sunday with concussions, while Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski was out with a chest injury.

There’s no doubt that New York will miss Barkley’s production greatly, as he still managed 1,003 rushing yards and six scores despite battling through injuries in 2019. The 2018 Rookie of the Year was also selected a Giants’ captain for the second consecutive year earlier in September.
