Trace McSorley Featured In Viral TikTok Trend

As if this season couldn’t get weirder for Penn State football, former star quarterback Trace McSorley has become an overnight TikTok sensation.

McSorley, who is currently the third-string quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, has legitimately become the most popular NFL player on the social media app. His stardom boiled over Saturday when the official NFL account posted a video about him that’s already racked up 1.7 million views in just 16 hours.

The trend features the song “Trace McSorley” by Matty Fresh, a Penn State alum whose songs about McSorley and Saquon Barkley have become cult favorites for Nittany Lions fans. An edited version of the song was uploaded to TikTok and has now been used in more than 3,000 videos, while #tracemcsorley has accumulated more than 20 million views.

If you’re confused, don’t worry, because so is most of TikTok that isn’t in on the “joke.” The trend is just another result of the internet taking a niche, slightly fun moment and blowing it out of proportion. When a confused internet passerby asks someone to explain what’s going on, they’ll just reply to their comment with a video of McSorley highlights.

The song is legitimately catchy but has a comedic aspect to it, which makes it ripe for a TikTok trend. Videos and Tweets now feature people saying they’re voting for McSorley, starting him on their fantasy teams, paying lots of money to get him on their Madden teams, and even suggesting the Ravens bench Lamar Jackson so that Trace can play.

One account on TikTok named “sorley_yt” has even converted its page to feature only McSorley content. It’s now accumulated 57,000 followers, two million likes, and around 40 videos about the quarterback.

McSorley hasn’t achieved much in his short NFL career, but this corner of TikTok thinks he’s poised for success after watching preseason tape and highlights of him at Penn State. Although this trend will likely be just a small blip on the internet radar, TikTok would surely go crazy if he sees field action soon.
