Penn State Freshman Running Back Caziah Holmes Impresses With Practice Highlight

Penn State football freshman running back Caziah Holmes is already doing big things as a Nittany Lion.

The former four-star recruit out of Cocoa, Florida was featured on the team’s Twitter account Thursday night with an impressive practice highlight. After taking a handoff from Ta’Quan Roberson, Holmes managed to hurdle a defender while taking part in Penn State’s classic “Lion’s Den” drill.

After vaulting over the defender in fairly close quarters, Holmes celebrated as the rest of Penn State’s offense chased after him.

As the team’s tweet suggests, Holmes’ highlight is quite reminiscent of another No. 26’s big play during the drill. Former Penn State football star Saquon Barkley embarrassed the Nittany Lions’ defense in August 2016 when he juked out four would-be tacklers on his way to the open field.

Barkley left Penn State with a program-record 43 rushing touchdowns and won the NFL’s Rookie of the Year award in 2018. Holmes, on the other hand, has yet to play a down at Penn State, but expectations are high for the young running back.

During their media day availabilities, Journey Brown and Noah Cain both explained how excited they were for both Holmes and fellow freshman Keyvone Lee. Running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider also discussed the talent of the pair of Florida recruits throughout his spring and summer press conferences.

Holmes put together an impressive career at Cocoa High School before arriving at Penn State. During his junior year, he rushed for 1,196 yards and 15 scores. He only improved as a senior in 2019, though, as he rushed for 1,472 yards and 19 touchdowns, while also hauling in 23 catches for 229 yards and a score.
