Transfer Portal Roundup: Week 12

Penn State football is now battling through the worst seasons in its history. An embarrassing 41-21 loss to Iowa Saturday dropped the Nittany Lions to 0-5 with little to look forward to down the road.

Meanwhile, some former Penn Staters are having career years at other programs across the country. Let’s take a look around at college football and see how some other Nittany Lions fared this weekend.

Daniel Joesph, NC State

Joseph posted five tackles and 1.5 sacks during NC State’s 15-14 upset win over No. 21 Liberty. His 1.5 sacks came on back-to-back plays early in the second quarter.

The game came down to the final drive when NC State blocked Liberty’s go-ahead field goal attempt with 1:18 left to seal the game.

Justin Shorter, Florida

Shorter posted a season-high five catches for 94 yards during No. 6 Florida’s 38-17 victory over winless Vanderbilt. He was one of Kyle Trask’s favorite receiving options on the day and tied for second on the team in receptions.

The Gators will try and keep their hot streak going versus Kentucky on Saturday.

C.J Holmes, Kent State

Holmes slipped under the radar as a transfer because he spent just one season with the Nittany Lions following his freshman campaign at Notre Dame. The perennial special teamer has lined up as a defensive back for the Golden Flashes this season.

Holmes took part in some #MACtion Tuesday, accumulating three tackles during Kent State’s 69-35 win over Akron. Holmes has six tackles on the season for the 3-0 Golden Flashes.

Zech McPhearson, Texas Tech

The Red Raiders didn’t hit the field Saturday, but he still made some headlines. The former Penn State defensive back announced he would be graduating with his second college degree in four years at the conclusion of this semester.

On the field, McPhearson is having a career year as a leader of Texas Tech’s defense. He is only one of two players in the country with at least three interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.

The Red Raiders will play Oklahoma State on Saturday, which just got embarrassed in its rivalry game against Oklahoma, 41-13.

Other Notables

John Petrishen (Pitt) posted one tackle during the Panthers’ 47-14 win over Virginia Tech.

DJ Brown (LA Tech) had his game postponed against LA-Monroe, marking the third straight week without a game for the team.

Hunter Kelly (UNC Charlotte) had his game postponed against No. 15 Marshall due to coronavirus concerns.
