Penn State Hoops’ Season Opener Postponed Due To Coronavirus

Update, 3:30 p.m.: Penn State men’s basketball confirmed in a statement Tuesday afternoon that its season opener against Drexel has been postponed due to “COVID-19 protocols.”

It’s not yet clear when the Nittany Lions’ contest against Drexel will be rescheduled for.

Original Story: Penn State men’s basketball’s season won’t get started this Wednesday, according to a report by CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

Rothstein tweeted Tuesday that the Nittany Lions’ season opener against Drexel scheduled for Wednesday, November 25 has been canceled due to the coronavirus.

Rothstein also added that the Nittany Lions’ game against VMI set for this Saturday remains on as scheduled.

Penn State is set to begin its new campaign under Jim Ferry, who’s been an assistant coach for the Nittany Lions the past three seasons. Ferry is taking over for Pat Chambers as interim head coach this year, as Chambers resigned in October following an internal investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct.

Several members of Penn State men’s basketball remain confused by the decision, as they discussed at their media day last week. Senior guard Jamari Wheeler explained that he wished Chambers “was still here,” while Myles Dread added that he’s not at peace with decision and wants “answers into why.”

If the Nittany Lions’ game set for Wednesday is in fact canceled, their next contest is scheduled for Saturday, November 28 against VMI. That game will tip off at 5 p.m. at the BJC and be broadcast on BTN+.

Penn State Athletics has not yet responded to a request for comment on the report. We’ll update this post with more information as it becomes available.
