Trace McSorley Throws Touchdown, Shines In Week 12 Ravens-Steelers Game

He’s baaaaack!

Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley saw his first action of the 2020 NFL season Wednesday when he took the field with the Baltimore Ravens late in the fourth quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Entering the game with the Ravens down 19-7, McSorley took over for quarterback Robert Griffin III, who appeared to be banged up and struggled overall. After a few incompletions and short gains (his first NFL passes!), he took the ball himself for a first down on 4th & 2.

Facing 4th & 10, Baltimore chose to punt the ball away on the ensuing set of downs.

Following a quick punt from Pittsburgh, McSorley and the Ravens took the field once more. Luckily, things went a bit better.

McSorley scored his first NFL touchdown on a 70-yard bomb to wide receiver Marquise Brown. The score brought Baltimore within one score, trailing 19-14. Pittsburgh went on to win by that score, improving to 11-0 on the season.

McSorley ended the day with two completions for 77 yards and a touchdown. He also tacked on 16 rushing yards on three carries.

Plus, McSorley now leads the NFL with a 121.5 passer rating…if you apply a minimum of six attempts, that is. Just saying!

McSorley, currently serving as Baltimore’s third-string quarterback, was promoted to the active roster after 23 total Ravens tested positive for the coronavirus, which prompted the game’s bump from a prime-time Thanksgiving slot. Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson tested positive for the virus on November 26.

After remaining inactive for nearly a dozen weeks, McSorley received his first snaps of the 2020 season during Wednesday’s game. He previously made his NFL debut in Baltimore’s Week 17 matchup with the Steelers last December, rushing for a single yard late in the meaningless game.

McSorley himself wound up on the league’s reserve/COVID-19 list two weeks ago but cleared protocol in time for Wednesday’s game.

As a Nittany Lion, McSorley broke a handful of passing records, became the winningest quarterback in Penn State history by going 31-9 as a starter, and helped capture a Big Ten title in 2016 before winning the 2017 Fiesta Bowl. He’s also gained fame as a viral TikTok star.
