Report: Lamont Wade Signs With Pittsburgh Steelers As Undrafted Free Agent

Former Penn State football safety Lamont Wade was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers shorty after the 2021 NFL Draft wrapped up Saturday, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The athletic safety was a standout player for much of his career in Happy Valley. He totaled 153 tackles, including 6.5 hits for a loss, and left with a bang with his 100-yard kickoff return against Illinois.

In his four years in Happy Valley, Wade played 47 games and started in 22, and was eventually elected a team captain for the 2020 season. His career at Penn State started off a bit rocky, as he transitioned from cornerback to safety and a had brief stint in the NCAA transfer portal. The former five-star high school recruit stuck around with James Franklin’s program, however, and developed into a trusted starter on the defensive side of the ball.

While he didn’t get too much media attention entering this year’s draft, Wade ran an impressive 4.47-second 40-yard dash during this year’s Pro Day.

Wade, a native of Clairton, Pennsylvania, now joins a Steelers squad that drafted tight end Pat Freiermuth in the second round of this year’s draft.
