Penn State Hoops Featured In HBO’s ‘Mare Of Easttown’

It looks like Penn State men’s basketball finally got some recognition in front of a big TV audience over the weekend.

The Nittany Lions’ February 2, 2014 matchup with Purdue was featured on the latest episode of HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” Sunday night. In the episode, a group of people is gathered around the TV drinking beers, eating pizza, and, of course, watching Penn State basketball.

Brief snippets of the game first appear around the 10-minute mark of the newest episode, “Illusions,” which is the fifth in the series.

The game is in the background during a bit of a lengthy dialogue section of the episode. One of the characters even yells “pass the damn ball” at the TV in typical Penn State hoops fans fashion. The Nittany Lions, however, went on to win the game 79-68.

In “Mare of Easttown,” Kate Winslet plays a detective from a small town in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The characters don’t know it yet, but the true king of DelCo (John Harrar) would have been hooping just a few miles away at Strath Haven High School when this episode took place.

The show features all sorts of references to Philadelphia, and the main character even sports a classic just-outside-of-Philly accent equipped with “wooder” and “yous.” While the show would have probably been more accurate to feature a Villanova or Temple game, it’s fun to see the Nittany Lions get a bit of a shoutout.
