College Republicans Chairman Responds to bin Laden’s Death

Sixty-six years to the day after the death of former German dictator Adolf Hitler was announced, the world once again has one fewer evil man in it. Yes, last night May 1st 2011 at around, 10:30 pm rumors began circulating that Osama bin Laden had been killed in a strike by US Navy Seals.

As details unfolded, climaxing in President Obama’s address to the nation, the message was clear: a man who had tormented the world was no more.

So to the 12 Americans killed in the 1998 Embassy bombings, the 17 killed on the USS Cole, the 2,974 killed on 9/11, and the 1,461 troops who died in Afghanistan, tonight is for you; as well as the many thousands of others around the world who came face to face with the evil that mankind can produce.

Though I serve as the Chairman of the Penn State College Republicans, I promise this is the 2nd to last time you will see me reference President Barack Obama or former President George W. Bush, because last night was not political. Last night was patriotic. As the streets of State College flooded with the Red, White, and Blue we so often casually look at, remember that feeling.

You remember where you were on September 11th 2001, so remember were you were last night, remember were you were when a faith in America was restored, and the person next to you wasn’t Black or White, Christian or Muslim, Republican or Democrat. There were your brother, your sister, and the pain you felt together on September 11th 2001 was just as real as the elation you share now.

As the days and week go on politicians on both sides of the aisle will claim victory, will claim that they were responsible, and will assuredly use this to get elected (or re-elected). But let’s not forget that no politician pulled the trigger. Tonight and the coming weeks are about our brave men and women in our armed services and intelligence communities. They deserve all the credit in the world, and they like neither donkeys nor elephants and only like red or blue when with one another and white.

This is not the end. The world isn’t all rainbows and bunnies now. Take solace in bin Laden’s death, but understand that evil still exists.

To quote President Bush as echoed by President Obama “We’re taking action against evil people. Because this great nation of many religions understands, our war is not against Islam, or against faith practiced by the Muslim people. Our war is a war against evil. This is clearly a case of good versus evil, and make no mistake about it — good will prevail.”
