It’s Time for Students to “Get in the Pink Zone”

The 5th annual WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State is rapidly approaching. For those who don’t know, the Pink Zone is a philanthropic breast cancer initiative run out of the Penn State Athletic Department. Every year, the Penn State Lady Lions Basketball Team devotes one home game to the Pink Zone. It is an awe-inspiring event that was attended by over 8,000 people (275 breast cancer survivors) last year and raised more than $80,000!

This year’s game will be on February 27, 2011 at 12PM in the Bryce Jordan Center and will air on the Big Ten Network for the first time ever. The Pink Zone has ambitious goals of raising $150,000 and having 10,000 fans in attendance. How can you make a difference, you may ask? It’s simple. Just show up! Tickets are FREE to all students if they enter at Gate A. The beneficiaries of the Pink Zone include:

  • Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute
  • Mount Nittany Medical Center
  • PA Breast Cancer Coalition
  • Blair Memorial Hospital

This event gives hope to breast cancer survivors, encourages widespread knowledge about the early detection of breast cancer, and facilitates effective communication to help eradicate the fear and devastation that accompanies a diagnosis.

This Pink Zone is being well supported by the Greek community and the IFC. As an extra incentive, each Greek member that attends the game will be credited with 5 hours of community service by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. With the extra focus on community service and community relations by the IFC and Panhellenic, the Pink Zone is a huge opportunity for Greeks to support this game and participate both in a community building and philanthropic event.

To top it all off, the Lady Lions stand at 2nd place in the Big Ten Conference at 9-3 and this game (which is the last home game of the year) could be an exciting one with the conference championship still up in the air.
