The group pressing for the naming of the field at Beaver Stadium to Paterno Field is going about it all wrong. First off, the official name of “Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium” cheapens the accomplishments and gifts of both Coach Paterno and General Beaver (General [Governor] Beaver gave us the funds for our first athletic field). When was the last time you actually called Medlar Field, “Medlar Field at Lubrano Park”? One of the names would simply be lost in conversation.

I think a better way of celebrating Joe Paterno (and his wife, Sue) is to rename College Ave to Paterno Ave. State College renames their streets after influential University Educators and Joe Paterno should be celebrated this way. The name on a street helps define a town and that road. Joe Paterno helped define Penn State University and State College as an educator and philanthropist, as well as the winningest coach ever.

College Ave doesn’t have much value in its name besides, “Oh hey its next to the college”. “Paterno Ave” would give more value to the street and celebrate the history of Joseph Vincent Paterno
