Register for Penn State Capital Day

All Penn State students are encouraged to register for “Capital Day,” which will be taking place on April 4, 2012 in Harrisburg, PA. Capital Day is an event where Penn State students, alumni and other university advocates participate in a series of visits to local state legislators in hopes to gain support for Penn State’s appropriation.

Attending Capital Day is vital for our University because it allows Penn State to form a strong relationship with State Representatives or Senators who represent us in the State capital. Especially with Governor Corbett’s announcement on February 7, 2012 of a 30% cut of state funding for Penn State, now is the time to ensure that tuition costs don’t increase.

Capital Day has shown to make a huge impact, last year the proposed cut of over 50% decreased to a cut of 19.6%. Council of Commonwealth Student Governments’ Governmental Affairs Director, Ben Clark explains the importance of Penn State students attending the event, stating: “You elect these individuals, they are to represent you, and you have every right to talk with them. They listened last year, let’s make them listen again.”

Clark (junior, accounting), also described his experience at Capital Day last year, “I had a wonderful meeting with Representative Geist, from Altoona. He was very engaging and wanted to hear about us. We were able to talk about Penn State, our experiences, and how vital the Commonwealth campuses are to gain access to this great university.”

The event concludes with a “Rally in the Rotunda”, where Penn State students and alumni, come together on the Capitol rotunda steps to show their collective support and display a solidified message. A complete agenda of Capital Day can be found here.

Capital Day is executed by The Penn State Alumni Association’s Grassroots Network, and student government groups –the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (CCSG), the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA), and the Graduate Student Association (GSA).

Please register by March 30 for Capital Day on April 4 by visiting here.
