THON News and Blogs

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon — more commonly referred to as THON — began in 1973 and has become one of the most far-reaching organizations on campus. THON has raised more than $136 million since its inception, now solely benefiting Four Diamonds at the Penn State Children’s Hospital.

Running such a large organization takes a lot of manpower. There are 16 committees — each with a director and about 20 captains — that are responsible for all facets of THON, from fundraising to logistics. In total, there are about 16,500 volunteers that make sure the event and everything leading up to it are as smooth as possible.

In addition to committees, student organizations, both Greek and independent, raise money for the Four Diamonds throughout the year leading up to THON weekend. These organizations also nominate the majority of THON’s 700 or so dancers; only a handful of these dancers are unaffiliated with an organization, or considered independent dancer couples. A leading THON fundraiser and tradition, canning will be phased out after the last designated weekend in September, which benefits THON 2018.

THON 2018 is set for February 16-18.

0 Jimmy Fallon Requests Songs, Promises $1g, Deletes All THON-Related Tweets

We at Onward State are perplexed. Famous late-night host and SNL alum Jimmy Fallon, who has apparently been following @THON on his Twitter account, requested late last night that DJ Larry Moore play either a Roots song or his own “Idiot Boyfriend.” If one of these songs was played, he promised a donation of $1,000. Now his THON tweets have all been deleted.

Spirits were high when THON’s 2011 line dance was revealed, and the screams of the crowd almost lifted the roof off of the Bryce Jordan Center. We hit the floor to hear first hand what the dancers and committee members thought.

Check out their reactions and photos of their favorite poses after the jump.

0 THON 101: Family Hour

Family Hour is without a doubt the saddest part of the otherwise joyful THON, but it’s one of the most essential. Last year, Onward State’s own Stefan Choquette explained it to me best: “Such a tear jerker. If you’re not a waterfall by the end of it, you’re a robot.”

Family Hour starts at about the forty-fifth hour, when Four Diamonds families are invited up on stage to share their emotional stories with the crowd. Some parents share stories of their children’s journeys battling their cancer, eventually triumphing over the disease in the end. But some don’t.

0 My Ideal Dancer Mail Wishlist

Dancer mail: maybe the most important thing a dancer can receive during the 46 hours that make up THON. Dancer mail delivery occurs sometime after the pep-rally, which is right about when the first signs of aches and pains and mental breakdown begin to affect the dancers.

0 @AbolishCancer TwitterTHON Raises $4,000 FTK

On Thursday last week THON teamed up with social media philanthropy Abolish Cancer to conduct the second annual TwitterTHON. In less than 8 hours @abolishcancer received more than 4,000 new followers on Twitter. Those new followers translated into a $4,000 donation to THON.

While the amount of money raised exceeded the site’s expectations, the greatest surprise was the passion with which everyone tweeted and retweeted to spread THON’s message. Sure, the Penn State community participated, but so did a bunch of “Twitterati.”

0 One Day Only: Pittsburgh To Host THON Canners

In canning weekends past, THON organizations have been prohibited from canning within Pittsburgh city limits. However, this Saturday, January 22, canister solicitations will be permitted in the city.

Pittsburgh law only allows charitable organizations to solicit funds on one day of a calendar year. Saturday marks the only opportunity for canning trips to fundraise within the city for the 2011 year. Check out the full scoop after the jump.

Tonight at the Bryce Jordan Center, Penn State Men’s Basketball will face off against #16 Illinois in its 3rd of 5 consecutive games against ranked opponents.

In addition to the intrigue that comes with playing a quality opponent, the game has added value in that all student ticket sales will go towards THON.

Tickets are $5. You can purchase on at the HUB today, or at the door tonight. So make sure you bust out your fanny packs, crazy colors and big pink Atlas hat (if you’re lucky enough to have one), and head to the BJC at 9:00 to cheer on the team.
