Underrated Food Spots In Downtown State College You Should Try

If you are ever looking to find a new food spot downtown, there are plenty of options available. While living in State College or traveling through town, there are plenty of small food establishments that many people never think to try.
Onward State compiled a few places for folks to try!
Big Bowl Noodle House
Located next to and underneath McLanahan’s is a Chinese-Taiwanese cuisine restaurant called Big Bowl Noodle House.
The staff is very friendly and generous with portion sizes. I typically have leftovers every time I buy food, and the prices are very reasonable for the amount received.
There typically isn’t a long wait, and the food comes out quickly. I love ordering the sesame chicken, but other popular items are the house special fried rice, steamed dumplings, Mongolian beef, and more. Each item I have tried has tasted great, and I don’t think you can go wrong with any orders.
Any time you are looking for Chinese or Taiwanese cuisine, step foot in Big Bowl Noodle House; it’s been one of my favorites for some time.
Sauly Boys
Sauly Boys is a burger and chicken sandwich spot on Allen Street. They also have a hot dog, grilled cheese, chicken baskets, fries (with variations), and milkshakes.
As far as burgers go in State College, I think Sauly Boys ranks high. I also don’t see too many establishments that offer a quick and easy burger to pick up, and Sauly Boys has filled that void.
Their sandwiches are decently sized, and the fry portions are enough to get you full as well. I recommend trying a burger if you ever stop by, since there aren’t too many places to find some.
Bubba’s Diner
Bubba’s Diner is a 1950s-themed restaurant that offers many types of burgers, sandwiches, cheesesteaks, hot dogs, salads, and more.
It’s very calming inside, and you can typically find a table pretty easily. The diner is also pretty casual and nice to just sit and socialize while eating. If you also want to go alone, there is a bar where you can sit and order from.
From what I have tried, I also recommend getting a burger from Bubba’s. I typically order the deluxe burger and ask to caramelize the onions, which adds great flavor.
I definitely also think everyone should get a milkshake. They are uniquely served in an old-school-style glass and always come out well, no matter the flavor.
Uncle John’s Jawns
Located on East Calder Way in front of the Antifragile Brewing Company, there is a cheesesteak stand that serves one of the best I’ve ever had.
I haven’t spent too much time in Philly, so I’m not an expert, but from the cheesesteaks I have had throughout my life, I can say this is one of the best.
If you are ever walking past Uncle John’s Jawns, give it a try.
Benny Leone’s
I actually don’t know how many people do or don’t know about Benny’s, but either way, I’m telling you to try it.
It’s five dollars for a cheese slice bigger than your head, and it’s really good.
Just a note to tell you that if you haven’t tried it yet, go do so. It’s also a great late-night food spot if you ever crave pizza at that time.
Go out and start eating, folks!
