IFC President Asks Students to “Party Smarter”

Max Wendkos, president of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), contributed a column to today’s Collegian making an argument against student-created drinking holidays.

However, in contrast to the normal argument against the holidays rooted in their obvious public safety implications, Wendkos asks the student body to realize that by disregarding the pleas of community members to control ourselves, we are telling them to “shove it.”

We have found ourselves in the middle of a political game in which we have no leverage. We cannot simply “party” those whohave expressed concerns into submission. The longer it takes the student body to recognize this and to make the appropriate adjustments, the more we stand to lose.

Head on over to the Collegian and check out the full column. It’s well worth the read.

Well, good for the Collegian!

Sending a reporter to the tournament is a much smarter decision than that time the paper sent staff to New York Fashion Week… ’cause frankly, I don’t give a shit what Collegian staff people think about cutting edge couture.

Vote for Next Year’s White Out Shirt!

Does being buried in snow constantly bring you down? Tired of walking to and from class in a constant white out? Get used to it. Penn State is projecting White Outs all the way into at least next October – but they need your help. Our good friends at The Collegian are hosting a poll to pick the next year’s White Out t-shirt. Be sure to vote here starting now before February 19 at 4:00 PM.

Yesterday, the Collegian wrote an article discussing the widespread use of Facebook at Penn State. The article discussed how popular Facebook is on campus, and how the Penn State fan page is used to deliver alerts to students (today it’s being primarily for students to complain about classes not being canceled).

Come on, Collegian, this is breaking news? It’s not 2006, EVERYONE has a Facebook, and in all aspects of life it’s become common practice to use Facebook as a means of communication. It must have been a slow news day when they had to resort to running this deprecated social commentary. If only a local Congressman had died, or there’d been a massive snow storm, or a White House aide had mocked Sarah Palin. Oh wait.

Read on to find out what other “breaking” news stories the Collegian could have run…

As reported earlier, CollegeHumor.com’s stand-up comedy tour will visit the HUB-Robeson Center this Saturday – a free show which only requires a Penn State ID for preferred admission.
The show will feature four of the websites staples – Penn State alumnus Jeff Rubin (2004), Streeter Seidell, Jake Hurwitz, and Amir Blumenfeld – in addition to headliner Dan Levy. Or if you believe everything you read in the Collegian, there is no headliner at all.
The explanation for the discrepancy between the paper’s story and reality is simple – previously reported headliners Wyatt Cenac was called into the Daily Show for a taping …

I pity T-Mobile for more than not being able to carry the Jesus Phone.
The company’s hosting a ‘CLIQ Challenge‘ on Facebook right now in which anyone with a Facebook account can “vote” for a school. The school with the most votes gets a free Weezer concert and $1 for every vote it received. That $1 per vote would probably go right towards Graham Spanier’s personal Eden, but hey, it’s still money.
The reason I feel bad for T-Mobile is that today’s Collegian article about the potential concert did not mention T-Mobile or the CLIQ once – the whole thing was referred …

Less than 24 hours after the UPUA held an event promoting campus safety on the front lawn of the HUB, just blocks away three men busted into a Beaver Terrace apartment at 456 E. Beaver Avenue.
The men entered the apartment around 4:45 pm this afternoon and exited with cash and cell phones, according to the Collegian article.
The men are still at large. Maybe it was time to go canning?

Apparently we’re no longer the only campus news outlet that knows how to find stories on Twitter.
The Collegian published a story this morning that used a tweet from Gavin Keirans to frame a story about student leaders’ reactions to the 2010 Senior Class Gift proposals. Personally, I would have been more interested in a story based on one of his other tweets, but the article did show that many people are unsatisfied with the current crop of proposals.
I can imagine it’s frustrating for the Senior Class Gift Committee to hear these complaints while knowing that all the haters could have …

Sunburned penguins, wounded zebras, and the Daily Collegian.
But seriously folks, YOU could serve on the Board of Directors for Collegian, Inc., which perhaps possibly perchance might be cool.
The Board of Directors is responsible for:

Overseeing the operation of The Daily Collegian and related publications.
Selecting the top management of Collegian Inc. and monitoring the performance of the Management Team.

Ensuring the financial independence and editorial freedom of The Daily Collegian and related publications.

Two vacancies currently exist on the board. They’re searching for one undergraduate student director and one at-large director (experienced grown-up).
Interested students must be full-time PSU undergrad …

Bronne Bruzgo is my new favorite reality TV star. Bruzgo is, of course, the Penn State student on Real World: Cancun.
Why? First, consider this quote by his friend Kyle Preston from a Collegian article published in late August.
“Everybody can tell who’s seen the show, he’s like most Penn State students. He drinks a lot and blacks out,” Preston said. “He’s not really destructive and he rarely has done things that put others at risk.”
Second, and more importantly, watch this clip, in which he proves that it truly does take him a lot to black out.

Andddd cue the chorus of ‘#1 …

UPUA President Gavin Keirans was cited in May for attempting to use a fake ID to get into Indigo Night Club, according to an article published this morning by the Collegian. However, after he completes ten hours of community service, the incident will be stricken from his record.
“I regret having my name involved in this,” Keirans (senior-business management) said. “I want to get back to what I love doing — that’s working for the students.”
Keirans was 20 at the time of the incident, but has since turned 21.
State College establishments are notoriously strict about not serving underage students, even in …
