UPUA Opens Encampment to OS Readers and Leaders

Encampment was launched by President Eisenhower (of Penn State, not the United States) way back in 1952 as an annual event bringing together all types of student leaders to promote dialogue within the student body.

When Gavin Keirans ran for his second term as president last spring, one of his major platform planks was the revival of Encampment (the last one was held in 2001).

This fall, President Keirans installed Greg Tallman as the Director of Encampment. At that time, Keirans described Tallman as a "prime time" person. Though his resume is indeed pretty rocking (THON Overall, Homecoming King), his success at reviving the inititve won't be clear until Sunday March 21, when Encampment opens once again.

Tallman describes the motivations behind the event,

Through Encampment, we hope to create a forum to better enable the students of this University to be recognized. We also hope that you take this time to reach out to other student leaders and create a dialogue voicing any issues you see lacking focus at Penn State.

We met with Greg last night in Old Main to help him announce a special offer for the Penn State undergraduate community. He has 25 spots to offer the free-agents, so to speak, of Penn State-- those students who are engaged and committed to the betterment of our university, but perhaps aren't involved in leadership positions with any major campus organizations.

Encampment will be hosted by the UPUA at the Penn Stater Conference Center on Sunday March 21 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and transportation between the HUB and the Penn Stater will be available. Students interested are asked to email [email protected] expressing their interest no later than Friday March 5.

THON Honored in Congress

Yesterday in Washington, D.C., Congressman Glenn Thompson [R-Pennsylvania 5th] sponsored a resolution to congratulate the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON) for a record-setting fundraising total.

Thompson gave a brief description of THON in front of the House of Representatives and congratulated the dancers, volunteers, and participants of the dance marathon. The bill was co-sponsored by Reps. Kathleen Dahlkemper [D-PA3], Charles Dent [R-PA15], Jim Gerlach [R-PA6], Tim Holden [D-PA17], Tim Murphy [R-PA18], Joe Sestak [D-PA7], William Shuster [R-PA9], and Frank Wolf [R-VA10]. It just goes to show that supporting THON is truly bipartisan.

Here's the video of his speech.

Distraction of The Day: LaVar’s Blogging

That's right, ladies and gentlemen. LaVar Arrington, one of the most astounding products of Linebacker U is now part of the blogosphere.

In what our very own Publisher has called "Kanye-caliber" writing, Arrington has been sharing his thoughts on everything from D.C. Sports to Tiger Woods on the site since February 20th. He could use a proofreader and tends to slip into TYPING IN ALL CAPS, but otherwise it's a great resource for tapping into the mind of a former Nittany Lion.

Penn State: Prettiest Girls in Central Pa

John Stewart once said something to the effect of : Penn State is all cows and hot girls. Well, I am very pleased to announce that Mr. Stewart was 50% correct. Penn State has the best looking girls in Central Pennsylvania and here is the proof.

Lauryn DeBaie won the title of Miss Central Pa in February, utilizing her skill in twirling (she is co-captain of the Penn State Majorettes) and a routine titled "Fit & Fun: Fitness for Today's Youth".  Along with beating out 19 other finalists she also won $1,100 in scholarship money!

The website for Miss Central PA describes the pageant as:

"Your Stepping Stone to Miss America and Miss America's Outstanding Teen"

However, just one small step remains between Lauryn and competing in Miss America. Lauryn has earned herself a position in the Miss Pennsylvania Beauty Pageant where she competes for the title of Miss Pennsylvania and $8000 in scholarship money. So Lauryn, from us here at Onward State we wish you the best of luck. Go out and prove to the rest of America that Penn State not only has the prettiest girls in the state, but also in the nation!

Found on Craigslist – Missed Connections

Craigslist is a big and sometimes scary place. Craigslist Penn State is no exception. In an effort to better serve you, our reader, we have started an new effort to highlight listings we feel should be shared with the greater Penn State audience.

We hope we can find what you’re looking for.

You = Drama ;-) - m4w - 22 (State College)

Its been a while since I last saw you. The only thing that I can remember was that kiss in the dance club. You were sitting in a couch and you saw me come up from behind you. You looked up and I bent over and gave you a kiss. The beat was pretty loud and I didn't hear what you said but maybe that was because I could be getting it confused with the sound coming from inside my chest. You have pretty blue eyes and a smile that is contagious.

When in Rome I threw a coin in the Trevi fountain in hopes that I could someday run into you again. I'll be in State College starting Spring Break and I hope to see you. I can't promise it will be as fun as the adventure we took with the ATVs in the Greek isles looking for the Temple of Poseidon, but I think a tour of the ice cream factory will do just fine.

Last time I saw a contagious smile, I got pneumonia... so, you might want to get that looked at.

Women’s Track and Field Claim Championship

Congratulations to the Women's Track and Field team, who won their second-ever Big Ten Indoor championship over the weekend.

Trailing in the team standings for much of the afternoon, the Lions screamed into first place with two events remaining, thanks to a 25-point haul in the 200-meters led by a victory from [Junior Shavon] Greaves.

Women's track and field will have a chance to go to the NCAA Championships this Friday and Saturday during "Last Chance Weekend."
