Kid Cudi: Smoke Free

Kid Cudi released a gamer’s anthem this week, “Capcom!,” a song recorded over a year ago that was written to be part of the Street Fighter soundtrack. I guess it never made the cut and now Cudi addicts are hopping all over the chance to hear a new release from their favorite off-beat loner. The production on the track is fiery with a horn section that’s as aggressive as a gladiator match. The low tones beat like war drums as the man on the moon spits a fierce rap in his signature so-stoned drawl. However, the lyrics were obviously influenced by some nerdy music director over at Capcom. It’s just too thuggish with lines like “Pow, Pow, Pow, I knock em down, I am flawless every round.” It’s not the “a little bit off” that Cudi maniacs are familiar with.

Cudi must be ready to fight, fire to fire by putting out the flame with his infamous lover Mary Jane. It’s not a belated April Fools, Cudders has kicked his ganga habit to focus on business. What business that is exactly has remained as mysterious as his up-coming rock album with Wizards. Faithful fans are nervous about the musical direction of dat kid from Cleavland. He came up so fast, making a name for him in the stoner rap bizz. Now he’s put out the joints and quit rapping. I heard of reinventing yourself, but has Cudi jumped off of the deep end? Check out the (kind of) new single and tell us what you think.

Chewi

Penn State MC Chewi has spent the past few Tuesdays, or Chewsdays as he has come to term them, releasing tracks from his debut mixtape, until it finally dropped yesterday. Although Chewi is new to the game by professional standards, you’d think he has been at it for years. Chew On It is a 13-song killer, full of jumpy, Cudi-esque flow, and Andre 3000-worthy punchlines. Riddled with dirty beats produced by Penn State student Oren Spiegel, you’ll find it hard to swallow this four-course feast. Available for free download (make sure to use the slow download, wait 102 seconds, and then download the zip file), you’ll want to learn the hooks asap as it won’t be long before this nasty dude with a rude attitude is frontin’ your favorite frats. Fresh out of the oven, take a bite and chew on it. Swag swag swag.

A&S Jams of the Week:

Childish Gambino- “Break (All of the Lights)”

Gambino once again proves that he is one of the most creative in the game with his reinvention of Kanye West’s hit “All of the Lights.”

B.o.B.- “No Future” (diss aimed at Odd Future?)

A possible comeback to Tyler, the Creator’s diss on B.o.B (explained in the beginning of the video), Bobby Ray shows he can go hard. A quick trip through Bobtropolis, let’s hope that the man from Atlanta keeps spittin’ like this.

Eminem ft. Slaughterhouse & Yelawolf- “2.0 Boys”

After Shady Productions signed Slaughterhouse and pulled in Alabama rep Yelawolf, the coalition released this eplosive track to prove that their combined lyrical fury is a dynamic to be reckoned with.

Yelawolf ft. Gucci Mane- “I Just Wanna Party”

This song just makes you feel G, ya dig?

Mac Miller & Chiddy Bang- “Heatwave”

Sampling the Motown goddess, Martha Reeves, Chiddy Bang and Mac Miller combine forces to put out one hell of a warm weather jam. Thankfully his new EP “On and On” is getting rave reviews, because this Pittsburgh rapper is supposedly slacking on tour. We’ll just have to wait until April 26 when Mac will be at the BJC with Wiz Khalifa to see for ourselves.

Jim’s Army & Navy: The Greatest Store Ever

For those of you who have ventured onto the west side of Beaver Avenue, there is a good chance you have passed by Jim’s Army & Navy. If you are one of those people, your first thought when passing by Jim’s was most likely, “What the hell is going on in this store?” When a store’s window display boasts handcuffs (they even come in pink), switchblades, throwing stars, machetes, other swords, and ammunition, you really have no choice but to be utterly confounded. Little did I know that I was about to walk into the greatest store ever.
