Penguins, Flyers Begin Quest For Stanley Cup

In a recurring development that never gets old, the NHL playoffs begin on Wednesday night meaning that Pittsburgh and Philadelphia fans will have the right to be as obnoxious as ever as the Penguins and Flyers both are in contention to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup.

The Pittsburgh Penguins garnered the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference and take on the Tampa Bay Lightning starting on Wednesday night. It has been somewhat surprising that the Penguins have kept playing so well after injuries knocked out stars Evegni Malkin and Sidney Crosby for the season, but Marc-Andre Fleury regrouped from a horrible start to his season to provide stability between the pipes and keep this team afloat.

The Flyers, meanwhile, got off to a fast start but have looked average down the stretch of the season, going 7-7-6 in their last 20 games, but they were still able to grab the East’s second seed. Their series with the Buffalo Sabres begins on Thursday night with the polarizing Russian rookie Sergei Bobrovsky starting in net. Expect this series to be one of the most exciting of the league’s first-round matchups.

Thankfully, the two Pennsylvania squads would be not able to meet until the conference finals, so all hope is not lost for some peace and quiet for the next few weeks.

Below you can find the Pens’ and Flyers’ first-round schedules. If you are looking for a place to watch the games, I have found the most hockey-friendly establishments around State College to be Champs (all ages welcome) and Bar Bleu. Let us know if you have any other suggestions!
