Wrestling Shuts Out Michigan State 41-0
The wrestling team continued their Big Ten schedule against Michigan State Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd at Rec Hall.
Despite not starting top-ranked wrestlers Dylan and Andrew Alton due to an altercation that occurred over winter break, Penn State did not lose a single bout. Both of Michigan State’s ranked wrestlers, #19 David Cheza at 157 and #4 Michael McClure at 285, were upset by unranked Penn Staters James Vollrath and Jon Gingrich, respectively.
#2 Nico Megaludis began the match at 125 with a string of takedowns for Penn State resulting in a major decision over Brenan Lyon 19-6. Jordan Conaway faced Brandon Fifield at 133. Conaway took Fifield down three times for a 7-2 decision. In the 141 bout, Bryan Pearsall wrestled Nick Trimble. Pearsall dominated the match with a major 10-2 decision and 2:18 in riding time. James English took the start over #5 Andrew Alton. English defeated Dan Osterman after two takedowns, an escape, and a point for over a minute of riding time.
Vollrath started for #5 Dylan Alton and had to take on #19 ranked David Cheza. Cheza had the first takedown of the bout, but Vollrath quickly escaped. Vollrath was on top to start the second, and Cheza took his opportunity for an escape. With 1:10 left in the second period, Vollrath took down Cheza to tie the bout at three. Cheza escaped with 45 seconds left in the second period. Vollrath started down for the third period and escaped to tie the match back up at four. With 20 seconds left in the bout, Vollrath took Cheza down which gave Vollrath the 6-4 win. Vollrath took the team into the half with a 17-0 win. Penn State had a 15-1 advantage in takedowns, with Cheza’s takedown being the only one of the match through the end of the half.
At 165, #2 David Taylor opened the half against Nick Proctor and started off quickly with a takedown and a near fall. Proctor escaped, and Taylor took down Proctor twice more before he got the pin at 1:37. Taylor had the first pin of the match.
#3 Matt Brown took on Jordan Wohlfort at 174. Brown took Wohlfort down immediately, but Wohlfort escaped. Brown took Wohlfort down four more times before the end of the first period resulting in a 10-4 lead. Wohlfort escaped to start off the second period, but Brown took Wohlfort down again with three points for a near fall. Brown led 17-6 going into the third. Brown escaped and added two more takedowns to give him the tech fall at 6:17.
At 185, top-ranked Ed Ruth faced John Rizqallah. Ruth took Rizqallah down almost a minute into the bout. Ruth pinned Rizqallah at 1:37.
#3 Quentin Wright was up against Luke Jones at 197. Wright took down Jones early on in the bout. Jones escaped, but Wright took him down again for a near fall. Wright took Jones down one last time in the first period to lead 8-2. Wright started down for the second half and worked himself into a reversal. Wright had a major decision over Jones 13-4.
Jon Gingrich started over Jimmy Lawson in the heavyweight against #4 Michael McClure. The first round ended up scoreless. Gingrich chose to start down for the second period and quickly escaped. McClure started the third round down and got an escape. With 50 seconds left in the match, Gingrich took down McClure and received two points for a near fall. McClure escaped and received a point for Gingrich stalling. Gingrich won 5-3 giving Penn State a 41-0 win.
Penn State faces Wisconsin in Rec Hall on Friday at 7 p.m.
