Uplifting Athletes Push-Up Challenge Set for Wednesday

Penn State students will attempt to do 7,000 push-ups before Wednesday’s basketball game against Michigan — one for each of the known “rare diseases” — as part of an Uplifting Athletes initiative.

Rare Disease Day is Thursday, February 28, and so Eric Shrive, president of Penn State’s chapter of Uplifting Athletes, decided to help out with this cool event.

It’s also an important day for Penn State apparel nerds like me. For the first time ever, the popular player-issued “IRON LION” workout shirts will be available for purchase to benefit the Kidney Cancer Association. You know which shirts I’m talking about — Craig Fitzgerald wears one with his shorts at every game, despite the subfreezing temperatures.

All this is happening near Portal 31 in the Jordan Center, with the Nittany Lion, student-athletes, and Uplifting Athlete representatives all expected to be in attendance. Penn State tips off at 6:30 against No. 4 Michigan on Wednesday, so make sure to show up during pregame to buy your shirt and do some pushups.

Hometown Brewery Releases Beer Honoring Evan Pugh

Penn State’s first president Evan Pugh was born in 1828 at Jordan Bank Farm, three miles south of the city center of Oxford, Pennsylvania, an hour west of Philadelphia in Chester County. One-hundred eighty-nine years later, an Oxford brewery is honoring one of the preeminent champions of “liberal and practical” higher education in the form of a delicious Porter.
