74 Days ‘Til Football: A Look Inside The Weight Room With Craig Fitzgerald

A lot of the work that goes into the product you see on the field each fall Saturday begins in the Lasch Building weight room. Filled with customized equipment that stresses injury prevention, something called a land mine, televisions to tell players what workouts to do, and Bill O’Brien quotes such as “Get after it,” this is certainly one of the premier workout facilities in college football.

In this Penn State Athletics video, Nittany Lions football strength and conditioning coach Craig Fitzgerald takes you on a tour of the weight room and provides some insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes to get guys like Michael Mauti looking like they’re capable of fighting a bear.

If you want an even closer look at what goes on inside the Lasch weight room, check out senior defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, senior guard John Urschel, and sophomore tackle Donovan Smath each benchpressing over 400 pounds a few months ago. There’s a reason that the motto “Iron Lion” is plastered on the walls and the team’s workout shirts.
