Natty Nittany: White Out Fashion

Beaver Stadium may have been a sea of white this past Saturday, but a few highly spirited individuals stood out among the rest. While the Intramural Fields are by no means a fashion runway, they serve as a space for Penn Staters to express their school pride to the fullest extent when game day rolls around.

I jumped at the opportunity to immerse myself into the tailgate scene and see how fans were wearing their love for Penn State. It just so happened some of my favorite fashion statements came from alumni and it wouldn’t hurt us students to learn a thing or two from them about how to work the white.

First up is Gabriella Colombo, a recent graduate from 2013. Gabriella’s DIY paint-splattered overalls caught my eye right away. Underneath, she wore a hoodless Penn State sweatshirt in case the late kickoff brought cooler weather. Brilliant!

Here we have a different kind of overall in Eric Peltier, who served as the 2010 THON Technology Overall. Eric defines classy sporting a vintage Penn State sweater purchased for $3 at a thrift shop (steal), layered over a crisp blue and white checkered shirt. He completed his outfit with navy blue trousers and Sperry boating shoes with a look that “he only brings out for Homecoming.”

Less is more for Sean Perry. After several series of chants encouraging a female fan to exchange shirts, the 2011 graduate finally got his wish and scored this stylish top (or lack there of). Cut in a design to resemble a Nittany Lion paw print, Sean reveals just the right amount to keep the ladies guessing. Not to mention, he’s got a great set of hair. (Side note: When I ran into him 15 minutes later, he managed to exchange shirts with another willing participant and was wearing a tight women’s tank top).

Fashion is all about making a statement and that is exactly what Kari Prisco did. I saw her sparkling from across the field and immediately chased her down. Rocking a silver wig, Penn State headband and football sunglasses, the 2005 Penn State graduate was hard to miss. Kari wore a vintage Penn State t-Shirt and star spangled jeans tucked inside red fringe cowboy boots. She may not have been in white, but she certainly showed her school pride.

Anthony Purpura is no stranger to spirit.  The former THON Morale Captain and 2013 graduate was thrilled to come back to his alma mater for Homecoming. So much so that he made a trip to Goodwill to get the perfect outfit — which is what you see here. The suit paired with a white afro (comb intact) resembles some sort of mad scientist, but Anthony said he “kinda just threw it all together.”  Whatever the case, it worked.
