Earlier this week, I asked for those dancing in THON to share their stories of why they're dancing. Because of all the great stories we received, we've decided to feature three dancers each week leading up to THON weekend.
It’s Thursday night at 2 a.m. You’ve had some refreshments after completing (most of) a long week. What could be better right now than the unbelievable deliciousness that is Wings Over? But it's closed, like it always is on Thursdays at this time.
Cumberland Posey, one of Penn State's first black athletes -- some say he was the first -- , only played professionally for a few years because he discovered his talent was in team management. His business skills made the Homestead Grays one of the most successful teams in Negro league history. It's been said he had a keen eye for choosing young players to develop into star athletes, with Posey having the record to prove it. Posey's team won nine Negro National League championships from 1937 to 1945, including two world titles.
A full-page ad appeared on page 5 of yesterday’s Daily Collegian that read: “Dear J, Hope she was worth it. Go f**k yourself. XO, C.” Turns out it was all a marketing ploy for a band.
Her battle began around March of last year when she began to notices twitches and small movements. After suffering multiple seizures, the diagnosis was confirmed as cancer. Since the last time we caught up with Kayla, she has hit a couple of "speed bumps," including being taken out of a chemotherapy study and put into a different one because her low blood levels called for a blood transfusion in late November.
