Are Numbered Penn State Helmets Returning?

We’re working on finding out, but an Instagram today from Penn State running back Nick Scott suggests they could be.

The freshman running back posted this, resulting in immediate Twitter speculation:

Of course, the last time we saw numbers like that on Penn State helmets was during the 2012 Wisconsin game when the team wore 42 in honor of then-injured leader Mike Mauti. In case you didn’t know, Nittany Lions actually used to wear numbers on their helmets during every game until the 1970s.

James Franklin asked the Big Ten Network if it was trying to get him killed when they asked him about possible uniform changes, but I don’t think many would mind a throwback like this. Penn State’s uniforms recently got a nod from NFL.com as the best in the sport, and I think give them a nice extra touch.

We’ve reached out to Penn State athletics to see if this is a legit uniform upgrade or if it’s just something Scott felt like doing, and will update when something is made official. For now, to the comments!
