PSU-Virginia Tech Football Series Moved To 2020

The first ever matchup between Penn State and Virginia Tech on the football field will be held two years earlier than originally planned, moving up to 2020 from 2022.

The Nittany Lions have played three teams from the state (Viriginia, William & Mary, and VMI), but it will be another five years before the team can face the Hokies for the first time.

The two-game series was planned to start on Sept. 17, 2022 at Lane Stadium with a second matchup at Beaver Stadium the following season. Instead, Penn State will play Virginia Tech on Sept. 12, 2020 on the road before the series heads to Happy Valley on Sept. 6, 2025.

This brings the possibility of a game with LSU in 2020 into question, as an accidentally-leaked Big Ten schedule had Penn State matched up with the Tigers on Sept. 12, 2020. Penn State is scheduled to play at Syracuse in 2020 as well.

Starting in 2016, the Nittany Lions will play nine conference games annually with three non-conference matchups, so this leaves one more non-Big Ten spot to be filled in 2020. We’re still five years away, but it’s already shaping up to be an exciting schedule.
