Jasmin Enriquez Speech To Kick Off Sexual Violence Awareness Week
UPUA will host Penn State alumna Jasmin Enriquez for a keynote speech focusing on sexual assault and sexual violence on Monday, April 6 at 6 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the HUB. The speech comes in light of recent developments at college campuses throughout the country and will touch on the overarching problem of sexual violence.
Enriquez, along with fellow alumnus Mike Friedman, will lead an engaging and interactive workshop focusing on information regarding consent, sexual assault, and rape, according to the event’s Facebook page. Enriquez, a rape survivor, will share her personal experience and stress the importance of supporting a survivor.
“This awareness week is really important to follow through on the activism against sexual assault that has been going on on campus both more recently and in previous years,” said senior Melissa McCleery, the chair of the Sexual Violence Prevention and Awareness Roundtable, the group that organized this event. McCleery is also an Onward State staff writer.
During her time at Penn State, Enriquez started Sexual Violence Awareness Week, and has since created Only With Consent, an organization dedicated to promoting awareness of sexual violence. The site’s homepage delivers its mission statement with this simple graph:
“[Enriquez] started the first Sexual Violence Awareness Week, and we’re excited to have her back on campus to see how far Penn State has come,” McCleery said.
UPUA’s first event on the slate this week will be a valuable one — be sure to head to Alumni Hall at 6 p.m. for an important presentation on a timely topic.
