Men’s Lacrosse Goalie Connor Darcey Passes Away at 21

Connor Darcey, the starting goalie for Penn State men’s lacrosse, has tragically passed away at the age of 21, as first reported by The Swellesley Report. The redshirt sophomore from Wellesley, Massachusetts was a Big Ten All-Tournament Team honoree for his late-season heroics last year. Penn State has not yet commented, although we would expect the university to release a statement at some point today.

Darcey had a promising career in net for the Nittany Lions and was honored in February as the first Defensive Player of the Week in Big Ten lacrosse history. This season Darcey started every game, had a .553 save percentage, and saved 146 shots in 12 games. Members of the lacrosse media took to Twitter to share their sentiments on his passing.

Our sincerest condolences to Darcey’s family and friends during this most difficult time. We’ll have more on the story as it develops.

Update (2:45 p.m.): Per The Swellesley Report, Darcey died overnight after a car accident in Boston’s North End. He was initially taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in critical condition. One other man passed away in the accident while another was critically injured. The crash was previously reported by ABC’s Boston affiliate with the passengers unidentified. It appears speed was a factor in the crash.

Update (3:20 p.m.): Penn State has released the following statement:

“Our hearts go out to Connor Darcey’s family, teammates, friends and everyone who knew him. It’s a very sad day. The Penn State family has suffered a tremendous loss and we are deeply saddened. Our thoughts and prayers are with Connor’s family, friends, fellow students and the men’s lacrosse family.”

Update (3:45 p.m.): ABC News affiliate WCVB reported three men were in a car crash on Commercial Street in Boston’s north end last night around  2:45 a.m. Darcey was reportedly in a BMW convertible with two other males that hit a car while making a turn and rolled over. Darcey and a 27-year old male were pronounced dead at the scene.
