Magic, The BJC: THON Celebrates 10 Years In The Bryce Jordan Center

The Bryce Jordan Center might have turned 20 old this year, but 2016 marks only the tenth time THON has graced its stage. Moving from Rec Hall to the BJC in 2007, THON has become one of the marquee events on the Penn State arena’s calendar each year. Though the venue hasn’t changed in a decade, many other aspects of the dance marathon have.

THON made its move to the BJC in 2007 as the dance marathon became more of prominent part of the student experience. The move was necessary to get this event out of crowded Rec Hall, which has a capacity of 7,200. THON raised $5,240,385.17 in 2007.

The theme in 2008, “Hope Finds A Way,” symbolizes the strides the organization has made from its humble beginnings in 1973. With new initiatives, THON raised $6,615,318.04 and broke attendance records.

2009

The total saw another jump from 2008 to 2009 as THON celebrated its third year in the BJC.

THON continued to power forward, breaking records across the board once again in 2009, raising $7,490,133.87 and garnering national attention.

THON surged into the new decade with a mantra that describes the atmosphere very well, “Love Belongs Here.” Dancers, orgs, volunteers, and a million others raised $7,838,054.36 FTK.

2011

Go Go Gadget revived the dancers during the last few hours of THON with their rock/techno covers of popular songs. Go Go Gadget is a Penn State favorite in State College.
The final hours of THON were just as wild in 2011 as they are now.

Another year, another record in the BJC with $9,563,016.09 raised, skipping the $8 million bracket completely. The continued support was visible in the stands as the attendance record also reportedly rose.

The BJC erupted in shock as the first ever eight-figure total was unveiled at $10,686,924.83. The 40th anniversary of the dance marathon was special as the growth from the days of THON in the White Building were evident.

2013

THON 2013 “Inspired Tomorrow’s Miracles” and hit a number of landmarks along the way.

THON broke $100 million donated to the Four Diamonds Fund since 1977 following a total reveal of $12,374,034.46. The BJC, as was becoming the norm, housed a rocking, capacity crowd.

2015

Though THON 2015 saw a lower total than the previous year, it also brought 708 dancers to magic, the BJC.

THON 2015 was not record breaking, and that’s okay. The weekend was still a vibrant one that saw celebration and dancing FTK and $13,026,653.23 revealed Sunday afternoon.

2016

THON 2016
THON 2016 is well underway for the tenth year in the BJC.

THON is back in the BJC for its tenth year in 2016. Will we break records? Will we fill out the BJC for the Final Four Hours? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure — we’ll do it all FTK.
