Basketball Will Take Part In 20th Annual Coaches Vs. Cancer Golf Tournament
For the 20th consecutive year, the Coaches Versus Cancer Golf Tournament will take place at the Penn State Golf Courses. Penn State men’s basketball head coach Pat Chambers plays host for the the fundraising event.
The annual golf tournament is the marquee event in a year-round fundraising list of events that Penn State’s Coaches Versus Cancer program runs. The program has already raised $2.5 million this year.
The tournament will begin Friday morning at the Blue and White Courses. 300 golfers from 60 groups are expected to be participating in the 2016 edition of the tournament. Following the day’s competition, there will be a reception starting at 6;30 p.m. at the Mount Nittany Club.
Former Penn State coaches Jerry Dunn and Bruce Parkhill both had a major impact on the program and will be there Friday. Parkhill founded Penn State’s chapter of Coaches Versus Cancer in 1995 and Dunn oversaw the first golf tournament fundraiser in 1997.
A number of notable former players from the Nittany Lion program will be participating in the festivities on Friday including Brian Allen, Dave Angstadt, Wally Choice, Nick Colella, Joe Crispin, Jon Crispin, Chuck Crist, Pete Lisicky, Kevin Montminy, Tyler Smith, Jarrett Stephens, and Alan Wisniewski. Five-time NBA Champion Ron Harper will also be on hand.
Silent auction headlining items include a signed Tim Frazier New Orleans Pelicans jersey and a signed Pittsburgh Penguins jersey from two-time Stanley Cup finalist and former Michigan Wolverine Carl Hagelin.
