Sky Blue FC Creates GoFundMe To Send Rocky Rodriguez To The ESPYs
Women’s soccer star Raquel ‘Rocky’ Rodriguez had an incredible year. First she scored Costa Rica’s first-ever Women’s World Cup goal then capped it off with a Penn State National Championship and took MAC Hermann Trophy honors (the Heisman of college soccer) in the process. Naturally, she earned a Best Female College Athlete ESPY nomination.
While all athletes nominated are invited to the ESPYs, none of the expenses are covered. Rocky’s new teammates at pro team Sky Blue FC took notice of the nomination and decided to set up a GoFundMe to send Rodriguez to the event. They detailed their efforts on the page:
None of the expenses (hotel, flights, food) are covered for her trip to LA for the award ceremony and we want to make sure she is able to receive this honorable accolade. We would love to make this trip extra special by flying her father in from Costa Rica to accompany her. We know it would mean the world to Rocky to have her role model by her side on this memorable day.
The page’s goal is to raise $7,000 and after one day, a total of 45 people raised $2,811. The team hopes to have the money raised by July 11, the day Rodriguez would leave for the ESPYs.
The pay disparity between male and female soccer players made headlines in the recent months, and despite Rodriguez’s reputation as one of the best young players in the world, she is no exception to the discrepancy. In an April interview with the New York Times, Rodriguez said that she and her teammates have yet to receive the World Cup bonus they were promised from the Costa Rican Football Federation.
