No. 19 Penn State’s Peyton Jones Is Big Ten Star Of The Week

No. 19 Penn State hockey (that’s pretty fun to type) had an uncertain preseason goalie situation. Freshman netminder Peyton Jones has been hard at work shutting down doubt. He earned the Big Ten’s First Star of the Week award today for his part in Penn State’s huge win over (then) No. 3 Notre Dame over the weekend and the subsequent series win.

The currently undefeated goalie posted a .918 save percentage (56 of 61 shots) on the weekend over the third-ranked team in the country. It’s no isolated incident — he earned the Big Ten’s Third Star of the Week accolade last week after his 7-0 shutout against Mercyhurst.

It’s too early for ultra-meaningful statistics, and Big Ten play isn’t even close to starting, but so far Jones sits among the nation’s top goaltenders. His 2.3958 goals against average ranks 21, his .916 save percentage is tied for 25, and he’s already posted a shutout. We’re excited to see what else this kid can do.
