Former Penn State All-American Aaron Maybin Raises Awareness, Funds For Baltimore Schools In Need
Former Penn State standout Aaron Maybin had to play in the frigid temperatures of Buffalo during his time in the NFL. Now, as a Baltimore-area schoolteacher, he’s raising awareness for the cold temperatures that his elementary school students have to learn in.
Maybin, a Baltimore native, is looking to raise awareness and money for the Baltimore City Public Schools that are without heat and light. On Wednesday, Maybin posted a series of tweets describing the tough conditions that he and his kids were facing in their classroom at Matthew A. Henson Elementary School.
To all my fellow #Baltimore educators that are teaching in class rooms with no light or no heat, remember what our students are dealing with also trying to learn in these conditions. They need our best effort

It's really ridiculous the kind of environment we place our children into and expect them to get an education. I got two classes in one room, kids are freezing, Lights are off. No computers. We're doing our best but our kids don't deserve this.

All the money in the world for building jails. But not enough for basic public school necessities https://t.co/d2cl0xiSNX

One tweet included a video of him having a discussion with his students about the extreme conditions in the classroom. In the video, in which some of the kids are seen wearing winter coats, Maybin asks his students how their day has been. One student responded, “Very, very, very, very, very, very cold.” Along with the video, Maybin wrote “This is unacceptable.”

When people began asking Maybin how they could help, he tweeted directions to a GoFundMe Campaign started by Samierra Jones, a Coppin State University student, and former Baltimore City Public School system graduate. The campaign has already far surpassed its initial goal of $20,000.
To everyone that has been asking me how they can help with the classes that are currently without heat, these are women that I know that are raising money to buy space heaters to help Keep our kids warm until we work out a solution. https://t.co/f1n2PfSH0U

Since schools were closed in the Baltimore area on Thursday, Maybin even spent the day collecting items for students that are in need.
Update: yesterday we raised 8,000$ of our $20,000 goal to get space heaters and winter coats for the kids in the affected schools. Thank you to everyone that has donated so far. Let's keep this going. School is closed today so I will be collecting items myself. pic.twitter.com/ryRbiJXuyt

The former Buffalo Bills linebacker hopes that his actions will put pressure on policymakers to fix the flawed conditions of Baltimore City public schools.
“We’re not sending kids into an environment where anyone could be expected to get an education,” Maybin told The Baltimore Sun. “It’s my hope that this community action and the response to this issue puts pressure on policymakers to not just put a band-aid on a shotgun wound.”
Maybin attended high school in Ellicott City, Maryland, which is only 20 minutes from Baltimore. After playing at Penn State from 2006-2008, he declared for the 2009 NFL Draft. Maybin was drafted No. 11 overall by the Buffalo Bills, and eventually went on to play for the New York Jets as well over the course of his four-year career. With his football career now over, Maybin has become both a schoolteacher and an artist.
